I'm no fan of Rush Limbaugh, goodness knows, but I rise defensively at today's "La Cucaracha" comic strip, appearing in the Sun-Times and other papers.
In the strip -- which is several days behind the news, though through no fault of the creator -- the TV burbles:
Conservative broadcaster Rush Limbaugh is trying to purchase a stake in an NFL franchise. If the deal goes through, Limbaugh hopes to change the team's name to "The St. Louis Klans."
That's just wrong.

“I’m no fan of Rush Limbaugh,”
That tells me you haven’t listened to him.
Many many years ago what finished someone off in all social discourse was when someone called you a racial epithet. You’d think you were in polite company, talking shop, when someone would turn around and call someone any number of ethnic slurs, and that someone was cut out of the game. What the hell can you say to someone when he’s just called you a nigger, kike, spic, jap, etc? It was UGLY and CRUEL.
We must be careful not to do the same thing in reverse here. Today calling someone a racist is about as threatening. I think we know now that calling someone a child abuser, even if he is not, finishes him off socially, maybe forever. We are not far from that by calling someone a racist. We need evidence before we call people child abusers. We should definitely ask for clear evidence of harm to a race before we cry racist. Doing so without evidence is UGLY and CRUEL.
It may be the exact same type of people doing both kinds of pejorative behavior.
Hey it’s Pookie! :)
Seriously, Rush should SUE these comic artists. This is going off the deep end.
RUSH HAS NEVER SAID ONE RACIST THING.
Roman Polanski can rape a child and no one minds. Rush has never said one racist thing but happens to be conservative, and liberals THINK conservatives are racist. So it’s OK to publicly SLAY him.
I hate this world sometimes.
Society is ugly and cruel today, Yaelle.
Seems to me the cartoon accurately represents what the media did.
and grand dragon bird, [d] senator gets a pass for DECADES...
"La Cucaracha" comic strip,"La Cucaracha". How appropriate. A comic strip about ... COCKROACHES.
For those that don't know 'La Cucaracha' means 'The Cockroach'. And the 'La Cucaracha' dance is mimicking stomping on them.
Family values -- and cleanliness and sanitation -- don't stop at the Rio Grande. /s
That's the Eagles who picked up Vick, not the Steelers.
But the Steelers could be the Horse Killers since a linebacker they had a few years ago had a couple big watch dogs that got loose and did kill a neighbor's horse.
My, my..they’re just so....so..FUNNY, those lovable looney lefties, aren’t they?
With their smear tactics...their public lying...their blatant racism..
Gee..straight out of SMERSH, isn’t it???
But hey...they COULDN’T be commies, could they? Nah...I’m just sayin’, is all...
Were all those cartoons from the same RAG???? Disgusting. I think Rush does have a case.
Too little, too late, Zorn.
No. The 4 I posted are from these publications, respectively:
Hartford Courant, Arizona Republic, United Feature Syndicate (national) & Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The subject of this thread is published in the Los Angeles Weekly & also has national syndication. Here's another fine piece of his work...
But not surprising, given the opposition and the rest of the misinformation they've managed to spread.
Such IGNORAMUSES! The DEMOCRAT party created the Ku Klux Klan...the DEMOCRAT party created and instituted JIM CROW LAWS....the Democrat party fought AGAINST every Civil Rights Law from the 1860’s to the 1960’s...including Al Gore Sr’s RECORDBREAKING filibuster AGAINST the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which the Republican’s were instrumental in passing.
Yep, and it isn't new. Do you remember this one?
He's a drugstore, truck-drivin' man
He's the head of the Ku Klux Klan...

We'll be lucky to get out of town...
Always the same brain-dead slurs. These guys never change because they never grew up.

BOB ENGLEHART, Hartford Courant for 25 years
Englehart says:
Contemporary conservative politics is all about hate. There is no "loyal opposition." There is only the opposition who wants to kill, destroy and wipe out the other side. Anyone who disagrees must be extinguished, crushed like an ant.
Lack of civility? Well, hell yes. There can be no civility when the other side wants to extinguish all who don't agree. It started with the radio squawk show hosts. Back in the day, there were only one or two. Now, there are dozens. We know who they are and we reward them by listening to them, even mentioning their names in public. That's all they need to set them off. Attention, the lifeblood of a tyrant.
They give legitimacy to conservative hatred. They popularize it. They make it part of the national fabric. They have harnessed the energy of that part of our population that is nursing a grudge. People with dashed dreams, bitter in their defeat, jealous of those who are better off but too proud to say it, people who have to feel superior to somebody, anybody. So many people are angry to be out of work, or afraid to be out of work, afraid of the next minute, the next hour, forget the next day.
The conservative squawk show hosts can nurture that national bitterness into a mob's hatred against anyone not like them. They find strength in irrational beliefs. They oppose for the sake of opposition, not because they have something better. They organize panic into a franchise that keeps them wealthy and above the fray while the fray nurtures their lifestyle. Look at the leaders and you will see the followers.
