With just over two weeks left until Virginias gubernatorial election, Democrat Creigh Deeds is left with a narrow path to victory, one that hinges on energizing key demographic groups and the durability of the Old Dominions new politics.
Even as Deeds trails Republican Bob McDonnell by eight and nine points in two of the most recent polls, his campaign and other analysts can still envision a comeback made possible in no small part because of the states political turn leftward.
Virginias Washington, D.C. suburbs, where one-third of voters reside, have gone from being a battleground region to a Democratic bulwark in recent elections, making it dangerous to write off Deeds just yet.
The demographic shift of the state combined with what we have done as a party allows us to have air in our lungs, said Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey.
Deeds, a state senator, represents the first true test of just how much the tectonic plates of the commonwealths political culture have moved.

Joe Abbey: master of the mixed metaphor.
All of the illegals and other immigrants have gravitated toward Northern Va.
Not this time, dems... not this time.
That idiot Terry McAufflic was on Fox today trying to explain why Deeds isn’t winning - didn’t work....Chris Wallace and Rove were both laughing at him....
LMAO it is funny watching the media spin a loss.
The democrats are watching Va. on how they will vote for 0bamaCare.

The folks in Southside couldn’t get their lawns mowed without a regular supply of Fresh Mexicans.

Great article that conveniently ignores the fact that this is 2009 not 2004 or 2006 or 2008!
Don't count your chickens ...
The way elections have been going nationally, it is hard to believe any repub could win a race.
I'm sure some last minute ballots in the 10’s of thousands will appear and Deeds will be the next Gov.
Yeah, if McAuliffe was part of the plan to get Deeds elected, I think it backfired. What a clown. Of course, while McAuliffe put on a show for Deeds, I don’t think his heart was really in it.
Right, because all the pollsters are just too stupid to know the demographic makeup and to adjust their samples accordingly.
Of course, there’s also the inconvenient truth that Deeds isn’t liberal enough for the liberals in NoVa (because he isn’t anti-gun), and republicans do win in parts of NoVa regularly.
If it’s even close, it will be jammed up in the courts for as long or longer than the Coleman/Franken race in MN was. It’s got to be a blow out in order for McConnell to survive the aftermath.
Va. needs to ban ACORN and moveon from Va.
“...I grabbed my horns and coat and got out of there eleven years ago.”
Me too. I practically skipped the way to my car as I left the Northern Virginia area 12 years ago. Came back to Washington once, this past September 12th.
