As the H1N1 flu outbreak strikes the U.S. early and hard, health officials are pointing to a worrisome number of child deaths and warn that supplies of vaccine will remain scarce for at least the next couple of weeks.
Delays in producing the vaccine mean 28 million to 30 million doses, at most, will be divided around the country by the end of the month, not the 40 million-plus doses that states had been expecting. The new count from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention means anxiously awaited flu-shot clinics in some parts of the U.S. may have to be postponed.

how many tens of thousands die from regular flu each year?
I’m reading “Influenza” by John M. Berry about the pandemic in 1918-1919. It came first as a very mild form but then spread throughout the world as and after many “passages” turned into a “quasi-species” swarm. I don’t really understand it but this particular version gets worse the longer its around and then it pops up in its most horrible form all over the world. I think I did read that they are thinking this stain is similar to the one that caused that epidemic. I’m not hoping to get the shot as soon as possible.
I find this hard to believe at all. The CDC has lied too often in the past about other deaths that I find it hard to take it seriously.
Also, how many are daycare kids? The swine flu is a weak strain. Those with immature (not weakened) immune systems have done just fine. Those with strong (college kids, nurses, daycare kids) immune systems are not doing so well. The problem is that the strong immune system overreacts to the swine flu. The gubmint isn't telling us that, though.
Why....I'd like to see folks who got to these clinics for a flu shot every year to get a postcard....and mail it in if they get the flu. I think we MIGHT be in for a surprise.
Horse hockey.
Cross reference CDC flu deaths with American Lung Assocition flu deaths. The CDC includes in their stats anyone who has died from flu, even if the flu was a secondary or tertiary infection. The ALA has the stats for deaths from just the flu. In some recent years, flu deaths were less than 1000.
The H1N1 is not mutating as they thought it might....but they deal in worst case scenarios because that’s what brings in the biggest bucks.
Hey you unfeeling inglourious basterd, That’s 11 x 52 = 572 kids a year. That’s a pandemic, for sure. And it would be even worse if they didn’t have to wear bicycle helmets.
Get a grip, and don’t ever, ever doubt the new regime’s statist (ics) numbers. The world is coming to an end, and the only hope is... you guessed it... Groucho Marx, er...Karl Marx.
Lock and Load, MoFos.
Politically driven less concern for those who
"ARE ORGINALLY APPOINTED TO BE THE GOVERNMENT" via a representative republic.
Here we go again...
Not just the flu but, combination of illnesses might be the cause.
A five year old here in the Austin area died from Swine flu but, her symptoms including RARE brain swelling from encephalitis.
Not like the "PIG" flu mutated back in the '70's when another peanut loving village idiot was head of state....
I’m really on the fence about the shot. Only 2 flu shots in my 51 years and good immune system. However, if I wanted to get the shot ..I couldn’t find a shot. WTF? It’s not like the stupid ass government didn’t know this was coming. HOW COULD ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANT GOVERNMENT RUN HEALTH CARE WHEN THEY CAN’T ROLL OUT FLU SHOTS IN A TIMELY MANNER!!!!
CLEAN HOUSE IN 2010! Repopulate the White House in 2012 (if it’s still standing).
I haven’t read this book, but I am curious if you know whether the fact that there had been a 4+ year world war, and its sufferings, and if it had anything to do with the susceptibility or transmission of the influenza during this time. Just curious.
83 children died from seasonal flu last year. So far in week 40 of this reporting year, 86 children have died. This predicts about a 35% increase in pediatric flu deaths this year. Significant, but not catastrophic.
As a former hockey player, I accept your verbiage, however I consider it...
"Horse Puckey". ; )
How many children have died this year from regular flu? I don’t think it’s that many. The CDC is saying that 99% of all tested flu cases this year is swine flu. Maybe swine flu is the strain this year?
I still don’t see how the CDC can tell the difference between regular and swine flu. And they don’t offer any adivce for precautions besides - wash your hands. They’ve been talking about this for months now - Why don’t they have enough of the vaccine?
I remember all the misinformation about AIDS, for example. I’m always very skeptical when the CDC speaks.
