Police: Jewelry store owner's actions 'commendable'

Daily Record/Sunday News Updated: 10/17/2009 02:05:26 PM EDT

Two people attempting to rob a Shrewsbury jewelry store Friday night were chased away when the store owner fired a shot at one of them, according to Southern Regional Police.

Chief James Childs said this morning that police will be looking at what Alexander's Jewelry owner Ken Zampier did, but said, "I think what he did was commendable," and described Zampier's actions as "sort of heroic."

Police said Friday night that Zampier may have hit one of the people attempting to rob the store. The (Baltimore) Sun reported today that Baltimore County Police responded to an Exxon station in the 300 block of Mount Carmel Road in the Hereford area at 8:16 p.m. Friday to find a woman who had been shot in the back. She was taken to Sinai Hospital, police said.

Childs said this morning that Southern police are looking at her as a suspect in the Shrewsbury incident.

A man and woman walked into Alexander's Jewelry in the 400 block of South Main Street shortly before 8 p.m.

The woman brandished a gun, and the man attempted to put a pair of "flex" handcuffs on a customer - there were two customers and two employees in the store at the time - Childs said.

As the robber tried to put the handcuffs on the customer, the two got into a scuffle. At that point, Zampier pulled out a gun and fired a shot at the woman, Childs said.

Both robbers took off, the chief said, and Zampier fired a second shot.

The man and woman were last seen running on South Main Street in Shrewsbury.

The suspects dropped the handcuffs as they left the store, he said. There were enough to have restrained all of the customers and employees.

"It was a split second decision," Childs said of Zampier's actions. He likened it to the decisions police officers have to make in the street.

Fortunately, he said, the customers and employees were not hurt and no merchandise was stolen.

Childs stopped by the store Saturday to check on the owner and staff, he said. He contacted another employee, who was off on Saturday, as well.

"They're OK," he said. "That was the big thing we were worried about."

It’s nice when the cop spokesman gets it right on occasion.
