Ich bin … busy ?

A year ago, the city of Berlin was so important to Barack Obama that he conducted a campaign event there. This year, though, the 20th anniversary of the fall of Berlin’s most notorious Cold War symbol and the end of the Iron Curtain doesn’t interest the leader of the free world.

Der Spiegel reports that Obama has taken a pass on the celebration of the demolition of the Berlin Wall (via HA reader Constantius):

US President Barack Obama has shelved his plans to attend festivities marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will reportedly take his place at the Nov. 9 celebrations.

Germany is going to have to wait longer than expected for US President Barack Obama’s first official visit. Citing government sources in Berlin, Reuters reported on Friday that Obama will not attend the anniversary festivities marking two decades since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event will take place on Nov. 9 — just two days before Obama embarks on a long-planned trip to Asia on Nov. 11.

Yeah, the Russians may take 0’s visit on that anniversary as an indication that he likes the idea of ‘freedom’.
Mixed messages are bad for diplomacy, you know.

Your correct, let’s not forget our leader “sought out” Marxist professors in college. Now, he is in the White House with his Mao-loving advisors. How the hell did we ever get here?

Seriously, it was just a backdrop to give him some kind of world-leader panache. He had never been there before and he’ll never go back.

The Berliners didn’t realize that they were no more than cardboard cutouts to him. He is a Democrat. He isn’t interested in foreign policy; for him its a distraction from his domestic political battles. His only interest, and his only interest, is consolidating his power in Washington DC. If Germans can’t vote for him they don’t even show up on his radar.

Ich bin a Berliner, remember when JFK said those now famous words at the Berlin Wall?

A German friend told me the people there that day laughed because a Berliner is a jelly donut.

JFK said he is a jelly donut.

Obama used Berlin when he needed to show that he could make America popular abroad.

In all due respect to HotAir, this is incorrect.

Obama's use of symbolism is a deeper thing. It's like Obama is using these symbols as talismen...using them for a kind of magic unrelated to their effect on his fans.

For example, his stage in Denver was a reproduction of the Temple of Pergamum...check this out:

BTW, the Temple of Pergamum is a powerful pre-Christian symbol and has now been reconstructed in--guess where--Berlin.

IMO Obama's use of powerful symbols (or should I say, power symbols) is not directed at voter perception...they are kinds of ancient good luck charms...Obama's uses them for the same reason that Hitler obsessed about the Spear of Destiny. He believes they have power and using them conveys that power to him!

JFK said he is a jelly donut.

Here is a tip from am ex-squid.

If you ever go overseas, you don't have to know the language...

but, give your best shot!

An honest effort, no matter how badly you butcher it will be appreciated.

Berliner (pastry)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Berliner with plum jam fillingA Berliner Pfannkuchen (also called Berliner Ballen, Berliner, or Bismarck in Canada) is a predominantly German and Central European doughnut made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil, with a marmalade or jam filling and usually icing, powdered sugar or conventional sugar on top. They are also sometimes available with a chocolate, champagne, custard, mocha, or advocaat filling, or with no filling at all. The filling is injected using a large syringe after cooking.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall is associated with Ronald Reagan and with Reagan’s worldview of America as a beacon of light confronting communist tyranny, there is no way Obama would want to be associated with such a commemoration. He would have to implicitly if not explicitly acknowledge that Reagan’s brand of tough diplomacy had actually worked.
