No, not funny. Sometimes you just crack jokes so that you don’t scream.

I don’t care what happens, I will not go to a nursing home, even if it kills me. I’ve seen too many mistakes first hand too many times with numerous relatives and their elderly friends. How about nursing home reform!

I remember listening to a woman speak about post mastectomy depression and how she didn’t feel like she was a woman anymore.
I imagine this would be the equal psychological trauma for a man.

My late Mom had Alzheimers...she could speak but never expressed discomfort.

To make a long story short, we had her transported to Emergency by paramedics because of general sluggishness and being 'out of it' more than normal, suspecting a stroke.

It wasn't until the nurse prepped for a rectal temp reading that a badly busted hip was detected.....total surprise to all of us.

The level of experience, care and attentiveness by the staff at most nursing homes rivals that of the sales staff hiding amidst the anonymity of department and big box stores.

There has to be a better way to provide care for the aging
I believe it is called family and at home care. Dying at home with at least some dignity intact would be a preference for many.

There is a better way. For 2 1/2 years I took care of my mother in my home. The last year she was incontinent. I didn’t waiver, my family supported me and she died here at our home. I have no regrets. None. If I can do it anyone can.

That’s so sad. My Mother in Law had dementia (they called it Alzheimers, but I wonder about that diagnosis). She knew who people were (responded to me and held my hand, but when my husband, her son, walked into the room she lit up like the sun, she knew exactly who he was). But she was not mobile and could not take care of herself. It was very difficult, but my Father in Law kept her at their home and took care of her, he could afford someone to come in a couple of times a week and help him.
Sadly, he had a heart attack and died. She died less than 2 days later and we have a joint funeral mass for them. I guess you can die of a broken heart, or you can hold on for someone else. I’m not sure exactly.
Anyway, it’s a terrible disease, especially since they cannot communicate things to you.
