The National Football League, in which each Sunday men weighing 365 pounds slam headlong into men weighing 245 pounds, has decided it can't handle Rush Limbaugh, talk-show host, age 58. C'mon guys, show some guts.
What began as a normal business dealMr. Limbaugh's participation in a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams NFL franchisehas degenerated into an unfortunate flap whose repercussions could extend well past Sunday afternoon football.
SNIP
What happened here, and is happening elsewhere in American life, is that Mr. Limbaugh's outspoken political conservatism is being deemed sufficient reason to ostracize him from polite society. By contrast, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who fires off his own brand of high-velocity, left-wing political commentary but lacks Mr. Limbaugh's sense of humor, appears weekly as co-host of NBC's "Football Night in America." We haven't heard anyone on the right say Mr. Olbermann's nightly ad-hominem rants should disqualify him from hanging around the NFL. Al Franken made it all the way to the U.S. Senate on a river of political vitriol.
But Rush Limbaugh gets hung out to dry by someone of Roger Goodell's establishment prominence, and barely a soul from that same fastidious establishment has the courage to step forward to criticize it.
It is no secret that this country's politics has become intense across the ideological spectrum. Rush Limbaugh lets his listeners blow off steam and then get on with the rest of their day. But if the people who claim to worry about such things want to see a truly angry right develop in this country, they should continue to remain silent while the left tries to drive Rush Limbaugh and others out of American political life. If that happens, the NFL by comparison will look like an afternoon tea.

Never really was a sports fan anyway, so the NFL won’t miss my non-viewership. If I had season tickets, I’d have a ticket burning ceremony in front of NFL offices. I already have a list of people whose CDs & concerts I won’t buy/attend, because I don’t want a political lecture.
It will be a cold day in hell when I go to see any Gator game. I will wear Red and Black until the day I die. I still remember when Charlie Pell sent Gator spies with cameras into the trees in Athens. Once a cheater, always a cheater...
The writer's giving away his age.
And so are you!
;^)
No SUPERBOWL!
“Baltimore Colts owner Robert Irsay” This guy needs to get into the 21th century. The “Baltimore” Colts have been in Indianapolis for 25 years and old Bob has been dead for at least 15. His son Jimmy was the one with the big mouth and small brain.
Yeah, I just can’t get into a couple dozen millionaires busting heads and slapping each other’s butts either.
I’m still puzzled how people can spend Sunday afternoons watching half-literate thugs stretch 4 15-minute quarters into a 3 hour marketing campaign. I always hear people say they’ll stop buying this or watching that; I’m the worst nightmare to the people who market this trash. I haven’t watched this sh!t in decades, and the next generation doesn’t either. I recently had to explain to my children that a kids show on in the afternoons is made by people who hate them for being white, and created a show that makes white look infantile. Sad when they have to learn that young, but that’s what a father’s job includes.
“The funny thing is, neither Al Sharpton nor Jesse Jackson are even football fans.”
And not a peep from these slime balls about Michael Vick, and HE’S ALLOWED TO RETURN TO THE GAME AFTER PRISON!
Those classless idiots (including M Vick) aren’t fit to tie Rush’s shoelaces.
I never understood being a sports fan of any kind. You are making an emotional investment in the outcome of an event over which you have
no control. Why torture yourself?
Same here. I go to see a A baseball game once in a while, or catch a football game at the local junior college. But big league sports has turned me off for years. I wouldn’t care a fig if the NFL went the way of the NY Slimes.
I know what you mean.
I've switched to watching Women's Nineball Championships on ESPN.
Much less violent!
Wow!
The league is close to 80 % percent black. To include Rush would piss about 60 % of them off. They (the league) can’t have any part of that. And with union negotiations starting soon, that makes the NFL even more reluctant to embrace Rush. But they will race to embrace Fergie. Who with her Hip Hop group, constantly use the “ N “ word. No doubt that the NFL will pay to some degree. But not near enough to be meaningful.
We hike ourselves; it’s not to get the kids outdoors, and everybody we run into (when we run into anybody) is just like us.
I’m a Browns fan. Have been for years. Are they considered part of the NFL? :)
College football? Yeah, that has high moral standards. How many of the players do you think really belong in college?
Are they aware that people will just turn to college football and let the NFL die on the vine?
Hmmm, let's see, $4 million a season to $30,000 a season. That will be fun to watch.
We hike ourselves; it’s nice to get the kids outdoors, and everybody we run into (when we run into anybody) is just like us.
Make that “nice” to get the kids outdoors.
When/where is the Super Bowl this year? Maybe a few thousand people outside protesting would send a message.
If there is no one in the stands, a protest would be useless.
I would like to see if they can survive by liberals alone.
