Fort Collins boy in loose aircraft (6 yr old boy found hiding at home not in balloon)
Denver Post ^ | October 15, 2009 | Kieran Nicholson

Rescuers are tracking and chasing a "homemade flying saucer" that is in flight with a 6-year-old, by himself, on board.

The incident started this morning in Fort Collins when the boy got into the balloon-like device, which was built by an adult, and it came loose from a tether, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

The contraption could rise as high as 10,000 feet, the sheriff's office said.

The home-made flying saucer was last seen in flight over Weld County.

The sheriff's office is working the Federal Aviation Administration to determine how to best get the boy down.

The homemade airplane was tethered in Fort Collins when the boy got onboard and it floated away. (Lisa Ecklund via 9News)

Not everyone had undisciplined parents who had brains in neutral.

Not everyone had stay at home parents and both of mine were old-school. Undisciplined...hah!

I have that topped, at about age 7 I reassembled a 38 revolver and when the hammer jammed on the barrel I finally tried to slowly squeeze the trigger to release the hammer at which point the sound left me deaf, car was filled with smoke (seemed like slow motion) took a while before I was sure I hadn’t shot my leg but put a hell of a hole in the car radio.

Those were the old days.

Hmmm I read that it takes 4350 liters of helium to lift a pound.

I know for a fact that it takes 11 - 60 gal. bags filled with helium to lift a pair of men's coveralls stuffed with toilet paper and a hard hat attached to a styrofoam ball to fly over the Houston Ship Channel.

I was thinking 50’ from takeoff, In other words over the neighbors yard. 50’ altitude would definitely hurt, but unless a head first drop it probably wouldn’t be fatal immediately. However if not treated for several hours even non fatal wounds have a tendency to become fatal.

“Something here isn’t adding up...”

Yes, like the 8 year old untethered it with the 6 year old INSIDE and is now lying because he killed his little brother.

Look lets be serious here and look at thing scientifically...

King Arthur: The swallow may fly south with the sun or the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land?

1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

King Arthur: Not at all. They could be carried.

1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: What? A swallow carrying a coconut?

King Arthur: It could grip it by the husk!

1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut.

King Arthur: Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here?

1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?

King Arthur: Please!

“Wasn’t anybody here a 6 year old at one time?”

Yes, and at Age 4 (and 3/4), I got ahold of my father’s M-16 (locked gun safe in locked closet), loaded it, and blew out the wall of the kitchen on full auto. (This was Israel in a “settlement,” mind you.)

Kids do amazingly stupid and dangerous things.”

ROFL.

Seriesly, 4 is the new 6, since people aren’t people until age 2 under 0bama.

A 50 foot fall certainly could be fatal, based on all sorts of factors, including where and what you hit on the ground.

Local media gal just cracked me up... describing the balloon earlier in the morning as being fully enveloped in helium.

Ha!  The fresh air you happen to be breathing is helium.

All those prayers for nothing!

If nothing happened then it means the prayers were answered.

Yikes!! I imagine your dad was not too pleased! Hopefully your mom was already complaining about how the kitchen needed updating...

This is an interesting point... where's the basket, or the object that was suspended by the tethers, if the tethers (suspension lines) in fact, actually were attached to something?

In reflection, is the envelope big enough to displace a 6 year old’s weight? If one compares the number of balloons, and therefore the displacement (of all of the balloons) needed to lift a grown man in to a lift off capacity, what's a third of that?

More questions than answers...

Now leaving this thread for further Freeper research on cluster ballooning.

Brothers not getting along?

Was one getting special treatment (adopted, harped on, etc.)

Both brothers sick of being awakened to follow storm balloons?

Just to be sure, do a mini-scared straight on the brother at the local jail.

It would seem the parents may be due some mandatory parenting courses (as per reports re: wife swap), and certain chemicals that may be unsafe on the premises.

If, like others said, they had no control whatsoever re: kids on the show and no regular, formal schooling.

maybe this was already posted.....I would not be surprised if this family set this all up for the media...
Let the baloon go up, no kid inside, then call the media and police.

What terrific PR for his “research”.
