Rescuers are tracking and chasing a "homemade flying saucer" that is in flight with a 6-year-old, by himself, on board.
The incident started this morning in Fort Collins when the boy got into the balloon-like device, which was built by an adult, and it came loose from a tether, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
The contraption could rise as high as 10,000 feet, the sheriff's office said.
The home-made flying saucer was last seen in flight over Weld County.
The sheriff's office is working the Federal Aviation Administration to determine how to best get the boy down.

A 20 foot wide circular balloon that is an average of 2 1/2 feet thick could hold 785 cubic feet of helium, enough to lift about 49 pounds. (1190 party balloons if each holds 2/3 of cubic foot of helium)
Obama diversion tactic.
And what would his dad do? Talk to him in Viatamese? Or Mandarin? What’s the mother’s nationality? Who pays for this boondoggle? Bush? Get a life, people. We’re being screwd over and you don’t see it.
Will the family have to pay for all of $$$ for the search crews?
where do you see that? Not even Drudge is saying that yet.

How many cubic centimeters of helium does it take to lift a hoax?
Thanks for the diagram.
I’m still not clear of the story: was this meant to be a tethered balloon, for a party... or an instrumented balloon for some type of weather investigation.
My guess right now is that they built it for the former purpose and that batteries and instrumentation would have been carried in the compartment. However, there may have been thoughts of a tethered flight for kids to ride in for fun before using it for the science flight.
If so, that would clearly have been intended to be done under strict supervision, and may be that the kids jumped the gun, and the balloon got away from them.
I also heard one thing about “ballast” ... and if there was ballast in the compartment of some type, that could have been taken out by the older child (or the younger) and the tethers didn’t hold. All will eventually be clear, but right now it is very murky.
CNN had it.
Woo Hoo! Praise the Lord.
Hiding inside a box in the attic of the garage.
Falcon, you little toot. You had me by the heart strings all afternoon.
They'll probably cut a $$$$ deal with the enquirer or people magazine.
“His parents are gonna KILL him!!”
I may personally go to Colorado, hug this kid, and then spank the sh-t out of this little sh-t.
Then I’ll beat the father for good measure.
But is it REALLY the same boy? The Grey’s are capable of incredible trickonology. Flying craft? Missing time? Do the math.......or whatever.
Wow, I was sure wrong on this one. As time passed, I was getting a little suspicious. Things weren’t adding up.
Title needs to be changed, if not already.
Japanese, why? What’s the difference, er, I should say, what difference does it make?
I saw the parents when they were on Wife Swap...it's just as likely that they were in on the hoax. Pops is a nutcase.
Here my friends you have a little Democrat....phony 6 yr old.
