MEXICO CITY The United States should reinstate a Clinton-era ban on assault weapons to prevent such guns from reaching Mexican drug cartels, former officials from both countries said in a report released Tuesday.
The group, which includes two former U.S. ambassadors to Mexico, also said the U.S. should do more to stop the smuggling of firearms and ammunition into Mexico by stepping up investigations of gun dealers and more strictly regulating gun shows.
The Binational Task Force on the United States-Mexico Border listed the assault weapons ban as a step the U.S. should take immediately to improve security in both countries. The 10-year ban expired in 2004...

Semiautomatic "assault rifles," one shot per trigger pull, are just old news. The ban that expired banned semiautomatic "assault rifles" just for cosmetic features, e.g. folding stocks, pistol grips, bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, etc.
Has anyone of these tool organizations asked where the cartels are getting their Kalashnikovs from?
I remember reading that the guns were actually coming from the Mexican military and being sold to the highest bidder ( drug cartel ) by corrupt government officials. It may not be true but is more likely that the guns coming from U. S citizens.
Right! Because those guys willing to murder people over a drug debt wouldn’t want to get an assault weapon for fear of breaking the law.
EBay? Wal-Mart? Lord knows that the iron-tight border of Mexico could not allow anyone to bring one ashore on any coast, nor is there even the remotest chance they came up through Guatemala where such weapons are easier to get. < /sarcasm>
Please Dims, push this envelope given the current political atmosphere, but know you do so at your own peril.
Correct, but it goes along with let the Americans do it, we already cloth, feed , educate, house and pay their medical bills, now they want us to enforce their laws. Bunch of sorry bast***.
Last time I drove across the border at Mexicali last April, the Mexican Customs agents didn’t even bother stopping me. All you have to do is drive through the “Nada Para Declarar” lane and you are in. I could have filled up my trunk with AKs and nobody would have done anything.
However, going from Mexicali to Calexico, CA, you have to wait sometimes for an hour, while every form of beggar/street salesperson is pumping you for pesos. And, there is a damn good chance your car might get inspected....
GREAT! More business we’re giving the Russians
Mexico should change its gun laws, and allow its free citizens to arm themselves. The government isn’t protecting them.
imagine the possibilities if the 30-some Million illegal hispanics in this country returned to Mexico and points south, determined to achieve law and order and economic stability at any cost.....6,000 years of no track record is pretty overwhelming,tho...so...Let’s blame America instead - yeah, that’s the ticket!
I fully expect our squalid federal government to address this by ensuring that nothing can easily cross the border...in the direction of Mexico. God help me for my intense desire to see so many members of our crap-stained political class meet the same fate as Benito Mussolini and his girlfriend.
CPT Clay Highly recommends Assault weapons and Ammo in the house of every FReeper and Patriot!!!
I'm with you CPT Clay, and with your permission would add...be loyal to the Constitution and founding ideals, not to any communist thug in our squalid government. They are not worthy of loyalty. They are only worthy of contempt.
Ping!)))
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Pretty soon we’ll have enough 3rd world imported amnestied citizens that they can just vote away gun rights, because they DO and WILL vote just like their masters in their ‘homeland’ wish them to.

[snip]* An overwhelming majority (69 percent) of people in Mexico thought that the primary loyalty of Mexican-Americans (Mexico- and U.S.-born) should be to Mexico. Just 20 percent said it should be to the United States.
