(CNN) South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham has always enjoyed a little back-and-forth with belligerent audiences.
He was at it again on Monday night as he faced down an angry town hall crowd in Greenville packed with libertarians and Tea Party activists who accused at the Republican senator of ditching conservative principles by working with Democrats on issues like climate change and voting to send Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.
But Graham stressed a mantra he's repeated many times since his friend John McCain lost the presidential election last November that the GOP must reach out to different constituencies, or face extinction.
"I'm not going to leave the Republican Party," Graham said when one questioned asked him why he hasn't yet joined the Democrats. "I'm going to grow it. We're not going to be the party of angry white guys."
His comments were met with a salvo of boos and shouts of "Ron Paul!"

That is bad news. The Party would be much better off if he would leave. And so would America.
We need to form a third party. At the worst, we won’t be any worse off than we are now. Actually it will be a second party. What we now have is one party with two names. The main party is the secialists and the main branch is named the Democrat Party, the secondary branch is named the Republican Party.
As it now stands, the socialists are killing us with no end in sight. If we form a new party, things may be hard at the beginning but we should start to see a light at the endof the tunnel if we persevere. If it fails because the people would prefer to be slaves than free men and women, so be it. The people deserve their slavery and we tried.
But you can take it to the bank that after the dust has settled, Congress will have passed obama care with everything obama wanted. The usual Republicans will have their fingerprints all over it also.
Where the heck are we supposed to go, then?
And, if we listen to you, Lindsay, we'll be a party of stupid white guys.
We'd be, oh, so much, better off if guys like Lindsay and McCain would just phone it in.
The Strange Case of Lindsey Graham has me skeptical about Arizona in 2010. Everyone says he’s going to get the boot, and I hope they’re right, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
Go JD, go!
And it isn’t going to be the party of sissy Rhinos either.
They ruined Florida also.
So I hope he likes angry white men, because he's creating them!
South Carolina’s delegation really shouldn’t need to be balanced out in the first place.
Try the Conservatives!
South Carolina elected this joke caker?
hard to fathom..
Amen. Somebody needs to drag the GOP into the 21st century. And he’s right too that if the GOP don’t change it views, our country will be run by liberals.
parsy, who hopes he is successful
Its not going to be a party of sissy little girl-boys named Lindsay, thats fer durn tootin.
There is a lot of room under his big tent, but not enough for the Constitution.
Go to hell, Lindsay, and take McLame with you, you traitorous bastard.
Call Lindsey tonight at 202-224-5972 option 1. Leave him a message asking why there is not enough room in his “big tent” for the Constitution.
Graham: “We must reach out to the kooks who believe in man-made global warming. I own stock in Goron’s and Soros’s company that makes the Ronco Climate Change Stopper machine.”
I’ll betcha Soros owns this guy like he does McCain.
If Lindsey were the model, the GOP would be the party of insufferable fairies.
LLS
Okay, then. Get out of the GOP Graham. Take that angry old guy, McCain with you.
