Drivers Should Be Forced To Pay Per Mile To Save The Planet, Finds Climate Watchdog

By DAVID DERBYSHIRE 12th October 2009

Motorists should be forced to pay to drive on the busiest roads to slash greenhouse gas emissions, the Government's climate change watchdog says today. The Climate Change Committee, led by former CBI chief Lord Turner, wants ministers to introduce compulsory road pricing to prevent global warming.

Under the controversial scheme, cars would be fitted with electronic tags and tracked either by satellite or roadside beacon. Charges would rise at times of peak congestion to around £1.50 a mile.

Heavy traffic on the M25 in Essex. Under a controversial scheme cars would be fitted with electronic tags and charged at times of peak congestion In a report to MPs, the advisers called for a carbon revolution - with thousands of wind turbines, nuclear power stations and 1.7million electric cars - if Britain is to meet its legally binding greenhouse gas targets.

The report also suggested 'eco-driving' tips - such as not braking suddenly and sticking to the speed limit - should be taught in driving lessons to reduce emissions. Past attempts to introduce road pricing were scrapped after opposition from motorists and civil liberty campaigners.

In 2004, the then Transport Secretary, Alistair Darling, announced plans for a national road pricing scheme. Motorists would pay between 2p and £1.50 a mile depending on the time of day and levels of congestion. But the idea was shelved after more than 1.8million people signed a petition against the green tax.

Now in its first annual report, the Climate Change Committee says there is a 'good economic rationale to introduce road pricing and thereby reduce congestion' and that 'the Government should seriously consider road pricing'.

Paying by the mile means no difference in price irrespective of the fuel economy of your vehicle. So it doesn’t accomplish what its stated purpose is.

Yesterday here in Colorado we broke the record low, set in 1905, by 5 whole degrees - 17 instead of 22. It doesn’t usually snow this early in Colorado, and when it does, it’s usually wet fall snows and not January-like ice-fog-snows, either. But, yesterday that’s exactly what it was.

Say, I wonder if “they” (whoever “they” are) will be good enough to tell us exactly when we have accomplished the goal of “saving the planet” (whatever the hell that might mean). So we can stop “paying for it”.

Ya think they will? Or ya think we’ll just keep “paying for it” indefinitely? Kind of like paying for a toll road that’s way beyond paid off, and the dough will just go into the Global Save-The-Planet Corruption Slush fund?

(am I being too cynical here?)

Amazing how enriching government can solve global warming. In fact, giving your money to them can solve just about anything while it gives the politicians plenty of money to get rich and re-elected while they tell you what a great job they’re doing saving the planet.

Is that rain or p#ss falling off our backs?

Whales are huge creatures that breathe out more than their share of CO2.

Lets wipe them out in the name of the Environment!

And don't forget dihydrogen monoxide...the most evil of the green house gases accounting for 20 times as much green house effect than all other green house gasses combined! Not to mention those evil CO2 spewing whales just wallow in this deadly pollutant!

Ban both these green house gases now! And ban oxygen to boot, because it contributes to evil "O"s per molecule to both the evil CO2 and H2O greenhouse grasses. Lets teach all the stupid life on the planet Earth a lesson in extinction! Its the only way to be "green"! BAN! BAN! BAN!

That evil horse breathes out CO2...particularly when it has to pull a heavy wagon. Those Amish industrialists are going to destroy the planet with their pullutin spewin critters, I tell ya! Plus they are cuttin down CO2 absorbing trees for furniture I here...for shame!</satire>

Progressives don't need a real problem...heck if they can sell CO2 as a pollutant, they can find an excuse to take money from whoever they want.

What a CAPITAL IDEA! And, when the idiots who dreamed it up are dangling from a tree, 30 seconds after the first tax bill arrives, a whole bunch of British Subjects will suddenly be free...

Japan has been doing something similar for 30-40 years now . $$$ tolls top ride any road which is speedy and or/ most convenient .

A 600 mile ride to Tokyo from Fukuoka will cost you around $ 250 . That’s $ 1 for every 2.4 miles .

The polar ice box blast that hit us recently (major record nighttime lows in northern Idaho where I live) was a consequence of the jet stream pattern, and not at all reflective of overall long-term trends in average global atmospheric temperature. Usually a jet stream directed cold air mass that comes across the U.S.-Canada border stays east of the Rockies, but when it is big and strong enough to do so, as in the present instance, some of it comes across to the west. Last night in Moscow-Pullman area the low was 10 deg. F., about 10 degrees lower than previous record, and we have new record lows four days in a row. Anthropogenic global warming is a pile of crap, but this weather event is not evidence of a global temperature trend, one way or another.

No, but the sunspots (or rather, the lack of them) might have something to do with it.
