no, all Coke did was to make itself rich, which is the REAL reason the Left is coming after them

It's difficult to understand why the beverages we and others provide are being targeted as the primary cause of weight gain when 94.5% of caloric intake comes from other foods and beverages

I don't support a soda tax, but those are also theemptiest, least nutritive calories in the diet.

The tax is the important thing.

Doesn't matter how you "justify" it, as long as the government gets more money.

All money rightfully belongs to the government.

How many people do you know who eat fast food daily and drink a gallon of coke a day yet they are skinny as a rail?

At the same time, there are many like myself who just look at a 7/11 big gulp and gain ten pounds.

Body weight and size are individually determined not only by eating habit choices but by genetics and metabolism.

Diet is not a one plan that works for all.

I understand a coke habit makes you skinny, not fat.

All those people trying to explain why so many people are fat have obviously never watched fat people eat. It is not what they eat that makes them fat but the humongeous amount of food they consume. Fat people are prodigous eaters. That is why they are fat.

The high-fructose corn syrup in Coke (and other soft drinks) didn’t help.

why stop with coke....why not put a heavy tax on tv consumption...maybe that will get people off their fat asses and make them find something more productive to do that will increase their exercise thus taking in less junk food....

Over processed wheat and sugar are the main culprits.

The cycle begins again. Tax something, and before you even get the expected windfall of ‘free’ money; spend it. Then you realize that the new debt is greater than the new revenue stream. Naturally, the only viable answer is to raise the tax.

Now we run into yet another basic Economic law. How much will an American pay for a can of Coke? At some point, Americans drink less Coke, due to the cost. Now the US Gov’t has not only managed to squander whatever income it has gathered - it will also, like any other parasite, kill it’s host.

How many people work for Coke? Wanna bet this tax will result in layoffs? Some immediate, but as the tax increases and demand plummets - thousands more jobs will follow.

How about taking the enormous tax burden off of us so we can relax and afford more vacations, activities, that would keep us healthier?

I’m sure I would weigh 5 lbs less if I was a housewife instead of having to work this desk job so as to provide us a decent kind of life despite all the taxes we are forced to pay.

I went to the Miami Beach Surf Club once, and the waiter asked me if I wanted bottle or fountain Coke.

That was the last time I heard that!

As a rule, I think, if you move more and eat less you’ve gotta lose weight. However, it’s important to eat good things.

I have a slightly different take on all the “fat” thing.

IMHO political correctness is making Americans fat.

Used to be, one was teased for a myriad of things. Being fat. Acting gay. Failing in class. Losing at dodge-ball. Whining...

Then it became fashionable to suppress the teasing which acted as such a strong social motivator to maintain some basic good habits. It happened that being fat no longer caused one to be teased. A boy wearing a dress became somehow a good thing.

Pass-fail mentalities replaced competition.

Dodge ball itself was eliminated. Never mind winning or losing at the contest.

Whining because an entire poltical party.

THAT is why Americans are getting fat.

And lazy. And immoral. And unproductive. And without skills or motivation.

Because nobody gets teased anymore growing up...

Talk radio doctrine is “That which is taxed, is reduced”

This tax is a hard one to oppose intellectually. Do they tax diet Coke too?

Have you ever seen a fat person order a normal coke? They always order a diet coke with their three cheeseburgers. It is not the coke that makes them fat.

Coca Cola is a symbol for America and that is why leftists around the globe have always hated it so much.

Taxing soft drinks is just another government money grab, to which I am totally opposed. As for the issue of sugar-laden soft drinks causing obesity—obviously, that is just one of many factors. But, some simple mathematics might be instructive.

Ingesting 3500 calories more than a person burns up will cause one pound of weight gain. Let’s compare two individuals who have the same metabolism and who do the same amount of exercise and have identical diets, except that one drinks a Regular Coke per day (155 calories)and the other drinks Diet Coke (0 calories.) At the end of one year, the Regular Coke drinker will have consumed 155*365=56,575 more calories than his Diet Coke drinking clone. If the latter has no weight gain after a year, the former will have gained 56,575/3500 = 16 lbs. And that’s just in one year, assuming one 12 oz. Regular Coke per day.

We had Coke machines in my school in the late 70s/early 80s and we had hardly any fat kids. We had frequent bake sales in school (NYC just banned school bake sales) and one class sold donuts every Friday as a fundraiser...but we also walked to the bus stop, were involved in sports, spent part of the day feeding farm animals and then the other part cleaning our rooms. We did not spend much time watching TV and none messing around on the computer...

It *is* disturbing to see so many fat little kids these days, but I am really sick of the nanny state.
