Sebelius: Americans must get swine flu vaccination (NOT ME!)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius appealed anew Wednesday for widespread inoculation against a surging swine flu threat, calling the vaccine "safe and secure." Sebelius unconditionally vouched for the safety of the vaccine, saying it "has been made exactly the same way seasonal vaccine has been made, year in and year out." Appearing on morning news shows to step up the Obama administration's campaign for vaccinations, Sebelius said that "the adverse effects are minimal. ... We know it's safe and secure. ... This is definitely is a safe vaccine for people to get."

I really don’t want to defend Sebelius on anything. But where does she say Americans “must” get the swine flu vaccination. Other than the headline of the AP story I don’t see the word “must” anywhere. Is there video of her saying we must get it? Is there another story out there other than ones copied from the AP story where she says that?

Once a long time ago I took a "flu" shot...got sicker than hell. I have never taken one since (probably 40 years or so) and I have never gotten the "flu".

I'm reading in various places (sorry I can't provide references) that this shot should be avoided.

I’m wondering if any of the posters here actually read the article. The word “must” was used only in the AP’s bogus headline. Sebelius was never quoted in the article even remotely to that effect. Now I grant you that her credibility is greatly undermined by her claim of “unconditional” safety, which is nonsense since nothing is unconditionally safe. And certainly I give virtually no credibility to any Obama official. However, my own research leads me to believe that this vaccine is no more and no less safe than any other U.S. FDA-approved influenza vaccine.

Already, two people in Boulder County (Colorado) are known to have died from H1N1, the first of whom is a 12 year old boy who came to my house several times with his mother just days before he became ill and died quite quickly, even though he was in intensive care. Post-mortem testing showed he succumbed to H1N1.

Thus, based on my own person experience, I can tell you that H1N1 is not to be taken lightly, particularly for children.

With Sebelius saying “you must”.....is the just the first step leading to mandatory inoculations. Pretty soon it will become “you will”. Another trigger for martial law?

I survived the bird flu scare. I can survive the swine flu scare. Now if pigs start flying, I’ll consider taking the shot.

How do they know it is “safe and secure”... have they tested it on a wide population? If it is so safe, why did Congress indemnify the manufactures?

I’m getting over the seasonal flu now. I’m in a high risk category and normally, I do get the seasonal vaccine. But I think I will wait until a few million others have been vaccinated before I get mine. Just so I can see how others react.
