Gen. David H. Petraeus, the commander of American military forces in the Middle East, at the Newseum in Washington last week. He received a diagnosis of early-stage prostate cancer in February.
General Petraeus, 56, who as head of the United States Central Command oversees operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, underwent two months of radiation treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, which had minimal impact on his work schedule, according to the statement.
The statement was issued by the generals spokesman, Col. Erik O. Gunhus, in response to questions from The New York Times.
At the time of the treatment, the general was spending four or five days a week in Washington for policy reviews, the statement said. General Petraeus also took at least one overseas trip during the period of the treatment, and he was able to maintain his regimen of physical training, the statement said.
The treatment is assessed to have been successful, the statement said.
President Obama; Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.; Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates; Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and other top officials were informed of the initial diagnosis and treatment, the statement said.
The general did not disclose the information until now because he and his family considered the situation a private matter and it did not interfere with the performance of his duties, the statement said.

TANKS,,,
Prayers for Gen.Petraeus,,,
I think the timing of this release is strange...
God bless this man. He is a true hero and a patriot who loves his country and his troops. I will pray and pray hard for him.
Adding my heartfelt thanks to the Prayers of a Grateful Nation. Prayers do indeed go out to General Petraeus and his family.
Oh No! Prayers for this very good man and his family.
Ja. I thought that too.
Cynical ol' me has to ask, "Now, why would the NY Slimes think to ask questions about General Petraeus' health?"
Perhaps President Obama; Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.; Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates; Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; or one of the other top officials who were informed of the initial diagnosis and treatment tipped off the NY SLimes.
And that is pretty sleazy.
Prayers Up for Gen. Petraeus and his family.
Prayers up.
My doctor told me that virtually every man that reaches old age (I assume he meant the 80s) has cancer of the prostate when he dies; not that it is the cause of death necessarily, but the condition is present.
Hope and pray that the General’s cancer is relatively non-threatening, and treatable.
Prayers going up for a complete recovery!
What you said.
Prayers for this man and his family.Hope they caught it in time.
Thank God he has his socialist health care.
Curious, how is his health care socialist? Would you care to expand?
O’Bammy mite be surrounded...
It’s time. Oh, Lord, I pray.
It's not socialist when it's provided by your employer. His employer happens to be the US Military.
That said, I hope he finds a good private oncologist. TriCare, which is not that good compared to most private insurance, will at least help pay for it.
Oh, puleeze!
