~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Sam Houston, Texas

Fort Sam Houston is a U.S. Army post in San Antonio, Texas. Known colloquially as "Fort Sam," it is named for the first President of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston.

The installation's missions include serving as the command headquarters for the United States Army North (formerly the Fifth United States Army), United States Army South, the Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) headquarters, the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Center and School, the Fifth Recruiting Brigade, 12th Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps Brigade, Navy Regional Recruiting, the San Antonio Military Entrance and Processing Station, and the U.S. Naval School of Health Sciences, Bethesda Detachment.

The U.S. Army has maintained a presence in the Alamo City since 1845. During that time, the installation has performed five distinct and important roles: that of a headquarters, logistical base, mobilization and training site, garrison and provider of medical support.

At first, the Army leased facilities in the City of San Antonio, including the Alamo. In fact, the Army repaired the Alamo structure and added a roof so it could be used as a headquarters.
In 1876, the Army began to move its facilities to the present site of Fort Sam Houston upon completion of the Quadrangle. The post has since increased in size from the original 92 acres donated to the Army by the city, to approximately 3,000 acres today.

The original U.S. Army Medical Museum was founded as a research facility in Washington, D.C., in 1862. Today, the institution is known as the National Museum of Health and Medicine of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 1920, the Museum was re-established at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, with the Medical Field Service School.

In 1946, the School and Museum were transferred to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In 1955, the Museum received its designation as the U.S. Army Medical Department Museum from the Surgeon General of the Army.

In 1978, the AMEDD Museum Foundation was established by concerned individuals to raise funds for a new museum facility. Built with private donations raised by the Foundation, the present AMEDD Museum officially opened its doors in July, 1989, and ownership was transferred to the U.S. Government.

Since its dedication in 1989, the U.S. Army Medical Department Museum has continued to enhance its reputation as one of the most outstanding facilities of its kind in the world as an ideal venue for the restoration, preservation and exhibition of significant historic medical items.

I did my residency in ER at BAMC. At the time there were 2 hospitals, the Main one with the ER and a few services, and the “pavilion” an old Cavalry barracks. Many a patient had to survive the “BAMC Miracle Mile” between the two.

Thank God Rodgers survived last night without getting seriously hurt.

Good morning, Everyone. Good morning to our AWESOME military, our allies, and their families

THANK YOU for all you do!

Thank you, Lauren, for preparing the Canteen for today’s activities.

Now for our local DC Metroland weather report

~ Today....Sunshine and a few afternoon clouds. High 72F. Winds E at 5 to 10 mph.

~ Tonight....Cloudy with a few showers. Low around 60F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30%.

You know, I think I just might get caught up on work soon. The good news is that it usually slows down during November & December.

Time for me to make my rounds. But, you stay right where you are. Don't touch that dial. And, remember – I’ll be watching!

Now remember, the Canteen is OPEN

So, come on in and sit for a while. There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM

DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above Honoring those who have served before.
