WASHINGTON (AFP) US President Barack Obama on Friday said the latest grim government job loss figures were a "sobering" reminder of a difficult "grind" ahead towards economic recovery.
"Today's jobs report is a sobering reminder that progress comes in fits and starts," Obama said after returning to Washington from Copenhagen, where he lobbied for Chicago's failed bid to land the 2016 Olympics.
"We're going to need to grind out this recovery step by step."
In a blow to hopes of imminent recovery, new Labor Department figures on Friday showed job losses accelerated to 263,000 in September, pushing the unemployment rate to a new 26-year high of 9.8 percent.
Obama, who is facing intense political pressure to speed up the US recovery after the worst economic crisis on record, noted that last winter, the economy was losing around 700,000 jobs a month.
"But our task is to do everything we can possibly do to accelerate that process.
"And I want to let every single American know that I will not let up until those who are seeking work can find work, until businesses that are seeking credit are able to get credit and thrive, until all responsible homeowners can stay in their homes."
"On behalf of every American, I will continue in that effort each and every day for as long as I am in this White House."
Earlier, as Obama headed back from Copenhagen, it was left to Vice President Joe Biden to give the first administration reaction to the figures.
"Today's bad news does not change my confidence in the fact that we are going to recover -- we will be producing jobs," Biden told reporters before a meeting in the White House.

I have spent my career in the US Oil and Gas industry. I lost my job under Bill Clinton. Now under Hussein Obama, I have lost it again! THANKS, Democrats!
Any idiot would know that immediate, acorss-the-board massive permanent tax cuts was the only action that had a prayer of arresting this.
Since you are all-knowing and all-seeing, omnipotent and beneficent, why did you not act on this undeniable truth?
He’s had MORE than his fair share of “Mission Accomplished” and “My Pet Goat” moments.
.....I wonder how many of them Michael Moore will feature in his next movie?
When he’s not drunk, he’s on crack.

Don't forget unexpected.
Rick Santielli said it best on CNBC today. He said CNBC had 3 analyst on today and all of them said you need faith. He continued to say when you hear that term from financial guru you need to run for the hills.
I don't know what he said verbatim, but he did say something to the effect that if we did not pass the stimulus bill that it would be the end of the republic, it would be game over for America, that we would no longer exist.
Sorry to say, but there must be a bunch of dumb folks in this 'republic' to buy into this crap.
The unemployment figures are racist.
Time for more wagyu beef and ice cream.
Sobering? Does that mean he was drinking heavily when he got the news?
Couldn’t have said it better.
