(CNN) -- Michelle Obama gave an impassioned speech before the International Olympics Committee. President Obama traveled overseas -- in the middle of debates over health care and Afghanistan -- to make his personal pitch to bring the 2016 Olympics to his hometown.
But despite their efforts, the Obamas will come home empty-handed as Chicago's dreams of hosting the Games evaporated in the first round.
The news stunned those awaiting the announcement, many of whom thought the battle was between Chicago, Illinois, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio also beat out Madrid, Spain, and Tokyo, Japan, to host the games.
Although the White House says the trip was the right thing to do, some Republicans say it will have some consequences for the president.
"Other than people who like to cheer, 'We're No. 4! We're No. 4!' I don't know how this is anything but really embarrassing," Republican strategist Rich Galen said, adding that Obama's failed pitch will probably be the joke on Capitol Hill for weeks to come.
"Given the last two months starting with the August recess and all of the issues that surrounded that, I think that the White House staff, the senior staff needs to get together somewhere and figure out how they are going to fix this, because they are in a deep slump," he said.

The result is obvious to me — the Olympic Committee is racist just like everyone else who says “NO” to zero.
Obama supposedly needed a victory of some sort. So they thought they would go and shock and awe the IOC delegates wtih the celebrity firepower of Barack, Michelle, and Oprah. But it didn’t work out.
oh well, poor Barack and Michelle. So much for dazzling the IOC and getting the games. I wonder if they take this personally? I wonder if Michelle thinks they “dissed” her daddy??????

I thought it was pathetic when Bill Clinton’s tax returns showed that Bill had been deducting charitable donations of his used underwear (especially considering how much rough use his boxers/briefs get). Obama is actually worse. He’d go on the road to sell Bill’s used underwear. The former junior US Senator from Illinois has absolutely no dignity, and he’s not even a good salesman when he lowers himself to that level.
