We can all draw the obvious lessons from President Obama's failure to sway the International Olympic Committee to hold the 2016 Olympics in Chicago. Many people thought he wouldn't make his highly visible trip to Copenhagen unless he had reason to know his pitch was going to be successful. Evidently not, as Chicago was the first city eliminated.
The IOC's announcement was greeted with "shock and disbelief," according to the Associated Press. Jesse Jackson, for one, was dismayed:
Civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson, who has long been based in Chicago, said he was surprised by the city's loss.
"I'm shocked and saddened. We were emotionally prepared for it," he said, noting that the United States had sent its "A team" of President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to push for the Chicago bid.
Come to think of it, there is a silver lining to Chicago not getting the Olympics after all: we won't have to put up with Jackson trying to jump in front of the cameras.
The funniest thing about the AP's account, however, is swimmer Rowdy Gaines' struggle to understand how Obama's mission could have failed:
"I'm still in a state of shock. I can't believe we couldn't get past the first round. I still thought the (Chicago) bid overall was the best," said three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ambrose "Rowdy" Gaines.
"Maybe there is some hangover from politics, from the last eight years," Gaines said.
I suppose that will be the explanation when Obama can't persuade the mullahs to abandon their nukes, either.
They just can’t help themselves, can they?
In all candor, I got that Ego has landed from Rush.
Who got it from Drudge.
Who probably got it from some astutely funny poster of FR no doubt
Nope. I didn't coin that phrase.
LOL
Okay, I missed Drudge and it doesn't really make any difference where it came from, it IS funny and regardless, it could have just as well come from a fellow Freeper Genius and for sure, it DIDN'T come from the Huffington-Puffington Post, Dummy-Underground or the Daily Kossak Kids as they have all O/D on KoolAid by now and some are giving serious consideration to slitting their wrist! lol
I'll go with Steyn on this one.
You would almost think this is something a FREEPER would make up just for comic relief.
I guess, you can’t make this kind of stuff up. The Left has come unglued.
Well, Rowdy did go to that Barn school on the Plains. RTR
tee hee.
Ain’t gonna work.Obama’s fault.
The games were awarded to Berlin by the IOC in 1931.
You forget to think about all of the new sports that could be created while in Chicago. Stickball has a new meaning!
Plus, I contend that many, many running records would be broken in Chicago as the athletes and spectators run away from the wild mobs.
Well, George Wallace, Timothy Leary and Bernie Madoff went to your esteemed uni-versitah, so I wouldn’t be talking too much. WDE
BTW, I think that what Rowdy Gaines said was ridiculous, but he generally is not known to be a leftie. Maybe it’s the chlorine in the pool water...
I'll go with Steyn on this one.
In 1931, the 29th Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was held in Barcelona, Spain and selected Berlin, Germany to host the 1936 Summer Olympics.
In 1933, the 30th IOC Session was held in Vienna, Austria and selected Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany to host the 1936 Winter Olympics.
In 1939, the 38th IOC Session was held in London, England and selected Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany to host the 1944 Winter Olympics which were subsequently cancelled due to WWII.
Dang I was sort of looking forward to the urban rioting event in Chicago.
Are those two guys with the funny sunglasses Secret Service or Black Panthers?
Beings Steyn knows more than you and I it’s probable, even though Hitler had not yet assumed chancellorship, he was a ‘playa’ ala Daley.
If they really hated Bush they would have given it to 0bama just for spite. Like that ignobel prize to Jimmah Carter.
Hitler actually was indifferent to the Olympics, it was Goebbels who actually convinced Hitler that the Olympics could have tremendous propaganda value for the Nazi regime.
Who knew?
