Rio Win 2016 Games as IOC Rebuff Obama

By REUTERS October 2, 2009

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Rio de Janeiro will stage the first Olympics in South America in 2016, the International Olympic Committee decided on Friday, delivering a stunning rebuff to U.S. President Barack Obama and favorites Chicago.

IOC President Jacques Rogge announced the decision to give the Games to Rio after three rounds of voting which produced a landslide victory for the Brazilians in a final showdown with Madrid.

Chicago, despite a speech to the IOC by President Obama, who had put his credibility on the line by flying in to address the IOC just before the vote, went out as fourth and last in the first round of voting, one of the biggest shocks in an Olympic ballot.

Chicago had started as front-runners and most Olympic observers had expected the Obama factor - first lady Michelle Obama spent two days lobbying in Copenhagen and also addressed the IOC session - to be decisive.

I don't think this signals the demise of Obama or is going to damage his presidency much if at all.

The only thing damage is likely to Obama's ego. If he is humbled a little by this that can only be a good thing for him.

Accurate, serious analysis seems so out of place on this thread.

Well, I feel like celebrating! I am so happy Chicago was put in its place. I wonder if they did get ANY votes.

The flight back will probably be a dangerous one and hope everyone is wearing helmets. I can just envision 'chelle and oprah throwing fits and objects throughout the plane.

“Obviously the Olympics and the world are racists to reject the Obama (the one with the gifr).”

With the selection of Rio that argument bit the big one.

Obama was in campaign mode, his speech was foolishly geared towards winning US votes, not IOC votes.

Yes, he has been in campaign mode for the past 9 months. That is all he knows.

Michelle even mentioned Chicago baseball, which is a sport dropped by the IOC starting in 2012.

She is clueless.

Obama tried to make his story sound like the Olympic story

It's all about him, all the time. His life is always the analogy for every policy. But such appeals to emotion are not persuasive to people who have brains that can think.

They left no reason at all for the IOC to vote for Chicago.

A shocking outcome for an Obama worshipper.

It WASN’T stunning. There just aren’t any CNN employees on the Olympic committee!

Oh for pete’s sake, why is it such a STUNNING defeat?

Someone wins and someone loses, just because “THE Long Legged Mack Daddy the Zebra, Mrs Mack Daddy and tons of arrogance Big Opie wanted it here and they loss?

Time for these three to get over themselves and smell the coffee - STUNNING DEFEAT, GIVE ME A BREAK.

You lost, get over it.

"You can play a great game and still not win," Obama told reporters at the White House after returning from Europe.

Humble to the end...

Words escape me.
