IRVING TOWNSHIP, Mich. Each day before the school bus comes to pick up the neighborhood's children, Lisa Snyder did a favor for three of her fellow moms, welcoming their children into her home for about an hour before they left for school.
Regulators who oversee child care, however, don't see it as charity. Days after the start of the new school year, Snyder received a letter from the Michigan Department of Human Services warning her that if she continued, she'd be violating a law aimed at the operators of unlicensed day care centers.
"I was freaked out. I was blown away," she said. "I got on the phone immediately, called my husband, then I called all the girls" that is, the mothers whose kids she watches "every one of them."
Snyder's predicament has led to a debate in Michigan about whether a law that says no one may care for unrelated children in their home for more than four weeks each calendar year unless they are licensed day-care providers needs to be changed. It also has irked parents who say they depend on such friendly offers to help them balance work and family.

Yes...they would much rather have the children take to the streets...you know, like the ones in Chicago.
Your government at work...one size fits all...no thinking required.
Or the mothers not work. Be on welfare instead.
No good deed goes unpunished. Especially when the state is involved.
Of course, the government in MICHIGAN (!!!) would know what regulations are required for someone to do a great job no matter what the job is, right?
“..In the home of the brave
Jefferson turnin’ over in his grave...”
The priorities here are really messed up...I wonder if the disgusting man who held that poor girl hostage for 18 years was ever question about the children he mysteriously “acquired”.
Another example of those pesky Democrats in charge of a state that is totally out of control. And we wonder why Michigan is so screwed up.
Everyone knows that only the STATE can properly indoctrinate kids in love for OBAMA and Big Brother. Children in the hands of parents is downright dangerous!
what ever happened to “it takes a village?”....
Same Michigan attitude that resulted in the legendary Dam Letters about 12 years ago....
Nanny state. The socialist government will decide how to raise your children for you.
"I was freaked out. I was blown away," she said. "I got on the phone immediately, called my husband, then I called all the girls" that is, the mothers whose kids she watches "every one of them."
Welcome to the U.S.S.A., mom.

People need to learn how to answer these things. Sounds like neighborhood kids playing with friends before school to me.
On most street corners in my area, there are kids waiting for buses in the dark. Rain, snow, cold, and wind, and those kids have to stand and wait. On one corner, last year, a young girl was waiting for her bus, alone, and in the dark. I wondered then why some mother didn’t bring the kids inside for a few minutes. I would, but then, I don’t want to pay some big fine for helping my neighbors, either. I guess I would just suck it up, and do what was right.
I would like to know how she was reported in the first place.
Busybody?
A daycare center?
Neighbor with an axe to grind?
A jealous parent who wasn’t allowed to join the group?
The real deal is they want all the tax money. They don’t care about the welfare of children in “unlicensed” day care. They care about the tax money they don’t get from “unlicensed” day care.
When I was a kid we’d gather at Mrs. W’s house before the ride to school. She’d often give us some juice. Then Mr. Wyman would drive the 3 or 4 of us to school.
I’ll bet Mr and Mrs W broke at least 3 laws there.
