WaPo Columnist: Time for Obama to Act Like a President
Newsbusters / Washington Post ^ | 29 Sep | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 09/29/2009 7:41:41 AM PDT by chuck_the_tv_out

On Monday, NewsBusters asked, “How do you know when an extraordinarily liberal politician is failing badly?” Tuesday’s answer is: When an extraordinarily liberal journalist like the Washington Post’s Richard Cohen not only notices, but is willing to write about it AND get his critique published.

As if coordinated, Cohen followed Newsweek columnist Howard Fineman’s “The Limits of Charisma: Mr. President, Please Stay Off TV” with a well-timed smackdown of his own called “Time to Act Like a President":

Sooner or later it is going to occur to Barack Obama that he is the president of the United States. As of yet, though, he does not act that way, appearing promiscuously on television and granting interviews like the presidential candidate he no longer is. The election has been held, but the campaign goes on and on. The candidate has yet to become commander in chief. [...]

The trouble with Obama is that he gets into the moment and means what he says for that moment only. He meant what he said when he called Afghanistan a “war of necessity” -- and now is not necessarily so sure. He meant what he said about the public option in his health-care plan -- and then again maybe not. He would not prosecute CIA agents for getting rough with detainees -- and then again maybe he would.

Most tellingly, he gave Congress an August deadline for passage of health-care legislation -- “Now, if there are no deadlines, nothing gets done in this town . . . “ -- and then let it pass. It seemed not to occur to Obama that a deadline comes with a consequence -- meet it or else.

Obama simply isn't presidential. He was a rock star for the left.

The reason for his endless campaign is that it’s the only thing he knows how to do. He’s clueless about everything else.

Gee, can we, the Voters, use the same Obama Principle?

"A majority of voters (excluding me) put Obama in the Oval Office. Ehhhh, we changed our mind now."

Maybe he doesn't much care about leading the US. I wonder if he's just biding his time until he feels secure enough to bring up the things he really wants to get done, like reparations. His guiding star for many years has been black liberation theology, a racist flavor of socialism.

“it’s the only thing he knows how to do.”

That’s because it’s the only thing he’s ever done. Running a presidential campaign comprises Obama’s ONLY executive experience. But now he’s president, and voting ‘present’ doesn’t work anymore. The big question is, can the nation survive long enough to elect somebody better in 2012...

“He’s clueless about everything else”

Going to Copenhagen to pimp for Chicago is a big mistake. This is going to poll very badly.

We should take Air Force One away from him.

Read the Pocket Obama and drink the Koolaid......

Introducing ‘Pocket Obama’: Must-have Anthology of Obama Quotes
By Noel Sheppard
Created 2009-01-24 13:40
Just in case you can’t get through a day without some refreshing and uplifting words from the new president, the History Company has created the “Pocket Obama.”

This is a tiny, pocket-sized book filled with “quotations borrowed from Barack Obama’s speeches and writings.”

According to its creators, “It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times.”

I kid you not.

As proudly described [1] at the History Company’s website (h/t NB reader John Pagonis):

Printed in a size that easily fits into pocket or purse, this book is an anthology of quotations borrowed from Barack Obama’s speeches and writings. POCKET OBAMA serves as a reminder of the amazing power of oratory and the remarkable ability of this man to move people with his words. His superb and captivating oratory style has earned comparisons to John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and this historic collection presents words that catapulted his remarkable rise to the American Presidency. It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times.

Includes themes of democracy, politics, war, terrorism, race, community, jurisprudence, faith, personal responsibility, national identity, and above all, his hoped-for vision of a new America. POCKET OBAMA is a portable, everyday primer for readers who want to examine the substance of his thought and reflect on the next great chapter in the American story.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: this has got to be a hoax. Well, the History Company [2] does indeed exist:

HISTORY COMPANY is a shopping destination like no other. It is a remarkable place where you can discover, enjoy, and find inspiration in the wonderful things that connect us to our past.

For over 10 years, we’ve offered an uncommon range of products that provide a brilliant glimpse of our uniquely American creativity and ingenuity, craftsmanship and style. In the process, we have been able to share the legacy of our roots in the form of fascinating, sometimes quirky gifts, for keeping or giving. At HISTORY COMPANY, the past becomes a present. Historian David Thalen wrote: “The challenge of history is to recover the past and introduce it to the present.” That sums up the mission of HISTORY COMPANY.
For ten years they’ve been selling historical items like White House furnishings, models, and of course books. However, as the only thing Obama has done so far is get elected, it seems a tad premature to view his speeches and writings as historic, doesn’t it?

After all, he could end up being a terrible president, right?

I guess the good folks at History Company aren’t concerned about this, as the minimum purchase of “Pocket Obamas” is ten.

It seems they think people just can’t get enough Obama.

I wonder if they’re considering making Obama soap for those who can’t do without The One even while they shower. Maybe a dashboard figurine, too, so that you can have him near you when you’re driving.

Stay tuned.

*****Update: As NBer mvfreeman marvelously pointed out [2] in the comments section...

This is eerily similar to Mao’s Little Red Book.

http://en.wikipedia.... [3]

Among the most widely printed books in history, Quotations had an estimated 5 to 6.5 billion copies printed during Mao’s attempt to transform Chinese society. The book’s phenomenal popularity may be due to the fact that it was essentially an unofficial requirement for every Chinese citizen to own, to read, and to carry it at all times during the later half of Mao’s rule, especially during the Cultural Revolution [4].

During the Cultural Revolution, studying the book was not only required in schools but was also a standard practice in the workplace as well. All units, in the industrial, commercial, agricultural, civil service, and military sectors, organized group sessions for the entire workforce to study the book during working hours. Quotes from Mao were either bold-faced or highlighted in red, and almost all writing, including scientific essays, had to quote Mao.

To defend against the theory that it would be counter-productive, it was argued that understanding Mao’s quotes could definitely bring about enlightenment to the work unit [5], resulting in production improvement to offset the time lost.

Yikes. That IS scary!!!

Obama wants to be a figurehead president—not a real governing president. He wants to perks to travel the world and have everyone bow down to him. As he does so, his czars are setting policies and regulations in place to “govern” the US and change it to a marxist nation. He doesn’t know what is in the bills because he has turned those little details over to his czars. I think that it is the same for foreign policy. That’s why he contradicts himself (lies) so much. It’s not so much that he forgot what he said previously, it’s more that he doesn’t know the details. God, help us, please.

Good idea, unless he does another victory lap around Ground Zero.

He’s a failure and he’ll never be anything but a failure.

He loves nothing but himself and he hates our country.

He was voted in because of the color of his skin, that’s all he has to work with and that’s always been.... all he has to work with.

He doesn’t need to “act” like a president, he needs to be removed from office or resign.... anything else will never be right this sinking ship.

He’s doing great in his mind. He’s doing the only things he knows how to do. Read speeches written for him, take orders from MO, Axelrod and Rahm, community organizing and pay to play schemes. He has a new slogan, that’s what he’s good at, slogans. FIRED UP? READY TO GO? FIRED UP? READY TO GO? FIRED UP? READY TO GO?
He and the big Wookie are having a ball on the tax payers dollar. They are going to milk it for all they can. They remind me of the Jefferson’s....movin’ on up.

Acting is about as close as Obama will get to being president, and I’d find it a relief if he acted like a patriotic American.

Rather polite way of saying he lies on the spot.
