Killer groupies an unexplained mystery
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/28/9 | Stefan Tomik

Even in his death row cell, satanic serial killer and rapist Richard Ramirez, the "Night Stalker,"receives bags of mail. And of the dozens of people who try to contact him each year, officials say, about 90 percent are women.

It's not just Ramirez who gets the attention, nor is Scott Peterson alone in the way he attracted admiring women even after he was sentenced to die for killing his wife and unborn child.

Death row prisoners often join the horde of grooms married in group ceremonies such as the one planned Saturday at San Quentin State Prison.

It's a phenomenon that's little understood and seldom studied: Women who fall hopelessly in love - or at the least become wildly infatuated - with the most feared killers.

"Our high notoriety inmates get the most interest," said Lt. Sam Robinson, a San Quentin spokesman. "I have tried to figure this out, but I don't have an answer."

Ramirez was convicted in 1988 of 13 murders and 30 other felonies, among them rape and sodomy. He had terrified Southern California in the mid-1980s and was called "the Night Stalker" because he killed his victims in their beds.

After he was caught and arrested, he met freelance editor Doreen Lioy. In 1988, the year he was convicted, he proposed. They married in the San Quentin visitor waiting room in 1996.

Ramirez had a choice. Other women had proposed to him, and today there are a handful of women who regularly maintain contact.

Some of them write to him or visit him, including a 30-year-old woman from Washington. The woman, who did not want to be identified by The Chronicle, said most relatives don't know about her relationship with Ramirez, although her disapproving husband does.

I thought we had the basis of great B-Movie here, “Attack of the Killer Groupies.”

What is to explain? These people are simply stupid.

I’ve never understood this, although I think that a lot of women have the fantasy of seeing themselves “rescuing” some misguided soul from his awful deeds. This is the basic Don Juan scenario, where somebody is converted by love.

It probably happens occasionally that men turn aside from crime because of the love of a good woman, but I doubt that it happens at all in the case of sexual psychopaths. They are in their own heads, they’re crazy, and any woman who thinks otherwise ought to have her own head examined.

It’s more or less equivalent to the question of why people vote for someone like Obama.

No mystery at all — evil attracts evil. The bible says sin is luring and those women are attracted to those evil acts. Its also known as projection. This satanist serial killer has quite a lot of power, continueing to lure his victims...

Reminds me of Watzername that continued to be Orenthal’s girlfriend right up to his current incarceration.

Ted Bundy had a large contingent of groupies. They even died, cut their hair and dressed to resemble his victims at his trial.

These women are seriously stuck on stupid.

AFAIK, there is no male equivalent, although this may because there are a lot fewer female multiple murderers.

“If women weren’t crazy I would not have found one to stay married to me for 52 years...”

My Grand Dad had a great saying about honesty like that, “It could hurt you or get you killed!:)”

There was actually a Delphi forum for women who fell in love with long-term prisoners. I suspect some of the women did it because they felt they didn’t deserve better. Some wanted sympathy. You should have heard them complaining about “spousal abuse” with their man stuck on Death Row. Some wanted husbands that would never come home. It’s easier to manipulate a man when he is in prison because the men do it to get money from the women.

Those are the women, you don’t to be in the same zipcode with, let alone be with.

Unfortunately, this rescue gene dwells in some men. We have friends with a son in his late 20’. He is handsome, smart, well educated and hard working. He has been wasting the last year and half with a female loser. She isn’t a criminal nor serial killer. She is one of life’s perpetual losers and repeats the same mistakes. Her reputation as a flake means she is basically un hireable where they live.

No doctor will have her as a patient as she is a PIA and never follows any orders/instructions from any Doctor or nurse.

This is the third such damaged wounded bird this young man has hooked with since his senior year in college.

They have no friends as they can’t stand her whining and loser behavior.

Borderline Personality Disorder(5 of 9 needed for diagnosis):

1. Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment. [Not including suicidal or self-injuring behavior covered in Criterion 5]
2. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation.
3. Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self.
4. Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., promiscuous sex, eating disorders, binge eating, substance abuse, reckless driving). [Again, not including suicidal or self-injuring behavior covered in Criterion 5]
5. Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, threats or self-injuring behavior such as cutting, interfering with the healing of scars (excoriation) or picking at oneself.
6. Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days).
7. Chronic feelings of emptiness
8. Inappropriate anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights).
9. Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation, delusions or severe dissociative symptoms

Last night there was a rerun of the series Snapped which is about women who are murderers. Throughout last night’s episode about a woman in Indiana, a male author was interviewed who was writing a book about this woman. In the update credits, it is revealed that he became husband number five or six of this woman and was married to her during a prison ceremony.

I first heard of this phenomenon after Richard Speck went to prison for killing 8 student nurses in Chicago. He got bags of marriage proposals, nude photos, etc. for years, and even he was shocked by it. This was a guy who was a totally amoral sociopath, and even he was moved to remark "there's a lot of really sick people out there."

The attraction is that the serial killers display the ultimate in male domination and sexuality. They are the Top Dawgs in the "mating display" arena.

In the mid to late 19th century, there was a spate of American women serial killers, who poisoned their entire families ostensibly for the insurance money (obviously it takes more psychological problems than pathological greed to be able to murder your husband and children, especially by so agonizing a method as poisoning) . Contemporary commentators were disgusted by the large numbers of men who wrote to these women offering financial aid and even proposing marriage to the self made widows. When a woman offender gets a lot of media attention today, the same dynamic reappears. Killer groupies are by no means women only.
