Photo of Obama and Spain's First Children Causes a Stir September 25, 2009 04:53 PM ET | Paul Bedard, Alex Kingsbury | Permanent Link | Print

Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was in for a rude shock if he thought the same privacy conventions that shield the children of public figures in his home country would extend to the United States. Zapatero brought his wife and two daughters along on his trip to New York for the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, and on Wednesday he and his family posed for a photograph with President Obama at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The photo caused a huge stir in Spain because the public had never before seen an image of its leader's children, ages 13 and 16, who appeared in the photograph sporting slightly gothic attire.
The photo, credited in the Spanish press to White House photog Lawrence Jackson, was posted on the State Department Flickr site, according to sources. Conservative news outlets in Spain prominently featured the photograph of the Socialist leader's familywith the faces slightly pixilated to comply with the country's aforementioned privacy laws concerning minorsin their papers and on their websites. The conservative El Mundo newspaper put the photograph on Page A1. The liberal El Pais, meanwhile, ran a detailed explainer about why it was not publishing the offending image.
After a request by the Spanish government, the White House removed the photograph from the State Department website. But it was too late. Many Spanish in-boxes today were flooded with a series of E-mails with the photographobviously altereddepicting the two teens as members of the Addams Family, the band KISS , and J. R. R. Tolkien's troll-like Orcs.
I think that the Mr. and Mrs. Z showed poor judgment.
Sorry, but who are they?
I wonder if Weird Al knew about that when he wrote CNR.
Socialists are always scary.
I am pretty sure that is Marla, from the Tom Hanks baseball movie, “A League of Their Own”.
The character was a very unattractive, but great woman baseball player, who had three priceless scenes. One with her leaving her Dad who had raised her, the second where they were trying to make her more attractive, and the best was her in a bar, singing a totally torch version of “It Had To Be You”, to a young man who clearly thought she hung the moon :)
It also starred Geena Davis, Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell, but believe it or not, it still was pretty good! Lol.
Tatt “Crying!?! There’s No Crying in baseball!!!”
I’ll have to watch that again. I’m sure I can check it out from the library.
ah thank you.
Now that is funny. I don’t care who you are.
Good Call...as you sit there wearing the RAVE/ForEver 21 $9.99 specials of the month. From the Clearance Rack no doubt..”I know this look Hot”. Great Call!
Heart rock group.
Whew... still laughing. Machogirl, this thread is sure to go down in FR history, tries to catch breath.
And the fact that the folks in Spain are the ones who started this show - well, IMHO, it proves that the internet has totally leveled the playing field, and any one who thinks they are the “ruling class” had better watch their back ; }
Tatt
I have no idea what a RAVE/ForEver 21 special is. In fact I have no idea what the he** you are talking about. However, if you think our first lady dresses the way a first lady ought to that is your problem. I don't think she does, in fact Bozo dresses like a slob, very seldom wearing a tie, for instance. As for me I am neither a President or a first lady and I don't have every Alphabet network in the US and half the world blowing smoke up my a** telling the world what a fashion Icon I am. If the news media used truth, people on FR, and else where, wouldn't be making fun of the way she dresses and just stick to the fact she is a criminal in league with her criminal husband.
It certainly is an interesting thread. :)
I was laughing pretty hard last night. I tried to just place my eyes on the adults in the picture when I was laughing.
So I assume that this “order” not to print pictures of the First Family of Spain at Public Appearances came from the Socialist President?
Waiting for the socialists here to strike out at the conservatives in Spain.
It is interesting that this controversy was under the radar of main stream press here, despite it being covered heavily in Spain.
Actually mama goth zapatero is even scarier—her daughters are lucky to be alive-—she has caused furor among conservatives in Spain:
In 2003, she gave an interview to the magazine La Razón, where some of her opinions about abortion generated controversy, mainly from right-wing think tank groups. She said abortion should be legal in all countries and that -—
“those who don’t understand this are people from the 18th century.”
(From Wiki)
There we go. :)
speaking of ozzy, that commercial that he did for iphone (i’m not up on that stuff) or whatever the product was, is incredibly funny.
i watched his show a little bit, and every other word was bleeped and the words that weren’t bleeped i couldn’t understand. that was funny. but i did wonder about something. is the reason he’s so hard to understand is that he’s British or was it his rumored, heavy drug use?
His brain is mush from decades of heavy drug abuse.
I guess that I must be from the 18th century. She should consider herself lucky that her mama didn’t abort her and she’s able to open her yap and comment.
I would assume then that she’s not a practicing Catholic?
What happened to Spain? What happened to the US?
