Photo of Obama and Spain's First Children Causes a Stir September 25, 2009 04:53 PM ET | Paul Bedard, Alex Kingsbury | Permanent Link | Print

Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was in for a rude shock if he thought the same privacy conventions that shield the children of public figures in his home country would extend to the United States. Zapatero brought his wife and two daughters along on his trip to New York for the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, and on Wednesday he and his family posed for a photograph with President Obama at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The photo caused a huge stir in Spain because the public had never before seen an image of its leader's children, ages 13 and 16, who appeared in the photograph sporting slightly gothic attire.
The photo, credited in the Spanish press to White House photog Lawrence Jackson, was posted on the State Department Flickr site, according to sources. Conservative news outlets in Spain prominently featured the photograph of the Socialist leader's familywith the faces slightly pixilated to comply with the country's aforementioned privacy laws concerning minorsin their papers and on their websites. The conservative El Mundo newspaper put the photograph on Page A1. The liberal El Pais, meanwhile, ran a detailed explainer about why it was not publishing the offending image.
After a request by the Spanish government, the White House removed the photograph from the State Department website. But it was too late. Many Spanish in-boxes today were flooded with a series of E-mails with the photographobviously altereddepicting the two teens as members of the Addams Family, the band KISS , and J. R. R. Tolkien's troll-like Orcs.
Unreal...just unreal.
Did you see #285? Took me a second to figure it out!
Lucky! I'd give anything to see them.
They're together again & have several shows scheduled, including a live concert at the Trocadero, Halloween night.
The Dead Milkmen (^)
Yes, in the book she was supposed to be a real looker when she was younger. I think the whole bald head and no eyebrows look was just invented by David Lynch to make her look creepier.
On a side note, the later books state that the sisters could have all but stopped aging and kept their good looks for an indefinite amount of time, but it was forbidden. They figured an order of ageless women would worsen their public perception as “witches”.
The one on the right looks like she’s packin’ heat in an ankle holster.
Yes, I saw some clips of recent live shows that people have posted on Youtube, they still sound good, though maybe a bit mellower in their middle age.
Awesome!
Well, they HOPE for a world without humans, does that count?
At some point your P.R. is just so bad that it doesn't make any difference . . . !
Do you remember that old Phantom comic strip about the ageless queen who would never die or grow old so long as she did not love a man -- and of course she confessed her love for the Phantom and then instantly turned from flesh -to bone - to dust, all in living Sunday comics color! I guess I was about 7 when I read that and it scared the pea-turkey out of me (after all, I still remember it nearly 50 years later!)
i saw one with 20 but I looked at the photos from the State Department website....it was unreal..he really did look like a cardboard cutout.
The kids wouldn’t look as bad if they just improved their posture.
You would think so... Spain really was headed in the right direction until they elected these people; it is a vision of our future.
maybe, i will ponder
That was before my time, though I did like the Phantom strip when I was growing up. There was a similar scene in the movie Excalibur that I watched incessantly as a child (it was one of about 6 movies we had on VHS). Morgana Le Fay had been using some magic to stay young, but Merlin dispelled it and she shriveled up into an old crone and was murdered by her son who didn’t recognize her. Maybe the writers were Phantom fans!
That is an entirely new planet to me. Wow.
I’m thinking hussein might actually be a computer hologram like from the Holodeck or something but then why would he need TOTUS.
Could be! I think it was Auden who said, “Novice poets borrow. Mature poets steal.”
Bad motherboard?
Thanks for reminding me about Juggalos.
GREAT!
Creepy, isn’t it.
