My father fought in World War I. One of President Wilson’s “14 Points” was

XIII. An independent Polish state should be erected which should include the territories inhabited by indisputably Polish populations, which should be assured a free and secure access to the sea, and whose political and economic independence and territorial integrity should be guaranteed by international covenant.

Be careful using words like “idiotic...”

the Polish military gets courage points for charging German tanks with horse cavalry. Stupid to be sure, but courageous.

Sorry to say so, but you're echoing Nazi anti-Polish propaganda.

That is a conclusion that troubles me;like Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, when you charge forward to certain destruction I think the stupidity cancels out the courage.

I was thinking about Pickett's Charge too when I wrote that. A poor strategic decision doesn't detract from the courage of the men who attempt to carry it out.

Several other states have a town named for Casimir Pulaski.

Kosciusko, Miss., is named for Thaddeus Kosciusko (Tadeusz Kosciuszko), who also aided us in the Revolution.

Other notable Poles, although not involved in the American Revolution, were Madame Curie, nee Sklodowska, who invented radium, and Nicholas Copernicus, who made the earth go around the sun instead of the other way around.

Huh. I never knew that. But why would the Nazis propagate that myth?

I am 65, born in January, 1944.

My father was born in Oct, 1893. He was 50 when I was born.

He fought in World War I, was wounded Sept 26, 1918. He had a giant scar on his leg and had lost most of his hearing.

Now YOU backtrack!

Sorry to say so, but you're echoing Nazi anti-Polish propaganda.

So with little more research I found this.

The Polish Pomorska Cavalry Brigade was engaged with a column of German infantry. They had surprised the Germans and charged into their lines. As the Poles charged through the German infantry, armor of the 20th German Motorized Infantry Division appeared from the direction in which the Poles had planned to retreat and regroup.

The Polish cavalry does appear to be charging the German armor, but only because the Germans showed up unexpectedly in their pre-planned escape route.

As might be expected, the German armor cut the Poles to pieces. As might not be expected surviving Polish riders waded into the dismounted 20th's (18th's?) infantry inflicting enough damage, and creating enough chaos and confusion to temporarily stymie the Germans.

An Italian war correspondent on the scene wrote this up depicting the desperation of the Poles. Germans propagated the story to depict how backward the Poles were. After the war the Poles continued the myth to show how brave their army had been.

President Obama scrapped the missile shield on September 17th, 70 years to the day after the Soviets invaded Poland. So we have to take some lumps for that.

It's all in fun. So far anyway ... Poland and Czechoslovakia are friendlier to the US than a lot of other European countries. That may change as they spend more time in the EU.

Ah, I see I was wasting my time with a response. Ok, we'll do it your way, and on your level.....

u r twepid....and a poopy-head

But seriously, the Poles are as good an ally as they come. I'm sure that also in France, there were many people there that abjectly opposed their government's stance towards the US. The person that wrote the article no doubt has no problem with us, but is royally pissed off at our administration and the idiots that voted for it. To add to that, our media isn't exactly showing him and the rest of the poles our side of things, and how disgusted we are with this administration. Quite the contrary, the media is out there carrying zero's water telling the world that all Americans love zero and everything he stands for.

Yes, my dad was a hero.

He was a soldier in the 320th Infantry (Company “K”). When discharged, he held the rank of Corporal.

My memories are sketchy since he died some 40 years ago. And he never talked much about his war experiences.

As I remember, he fought at Chateau-Thierry in the summer of 1918, then on to the Argonne Forest in the fall. He said he was hit by a machine-gunner in September, 1918 near the town of Verdun in France.

The bullet passed between the two bones of his lower leg and left a gaping slit. He said that in order to prevent infection they passed a bag of salt through his wounded leg. That was so painful he passed out. Later they stitched it up, but you could still see the wound - it was almost 9 inches long. He limped all his life.

He also said that his hearing was destroyed because of the loudness of the artillery explosions all around him.

I remember my mother telling me that he spent many months unconscious in a hospital in France, was thought at one time to be dead, and was scheduled for embalming when a nurse noticed a small mist of breath on a mirror-like thing held under his nose. So he recovered and was sent to an Army hospital in Carlisle, PA.

He finally recovered enough to be released from the hospital. He was given 5 cents per mile travel expenses to return from Carlisle to Pittsburgh, then it was either $26 or $260 bonus pay for serving.

He was awarded a “Victory Button” and a Purple Heart. We buried these with him in 1968.

FROM MATT, POLAND TO ALL WHO HAVE READ THE ARTICLE.

First of all, the computer-made translation is so accurate that the only words that come to my mind are - PIECE OF SH*T!

To make things clear, the article refers to so called Polish Jokes, commonly spread all across America where a regular Pole is depicted as a complete moron.

Little do Americans realize that the so called Polish Jokes mainly originate from Nazi Germany Goebbels propaganda.

This article aims at responding stereotypes by means of stereotypes, and has nothing to do with real opinion the Polish people has about Americans.

All began in early 90’s when Poland was beginning to shape her post-communist system, and America was ruled by democratic Bill Clinton.

In 1990, having in mind what Ronald Reagan had done to Poland’s independence, 92% of Poles were enthusiastic about America with absolutely proatlantic views. At that time, the European Economic Community (predecessor of the EU) wasn't the place Poland wanted to invest her future - we looked to United States only! We waited for the clear signal, a clear message from across the ocean, for the signal that never came!

Little do you realize that when the first Gulf War broke out, Poland secretly came with all her intelligence structures to the aid of America, saving many American CIA agents trapped in Saddam's Iraq and giving them tons of priceless information about Iraqi military facilities, since the Polish building companies had built them in former communist times.

To realize the attitude of George Bush (senior) administration to Poland it's enough to say that Poland became the official representative of US interests in Iraq after USA had broken her diplomatic relations with Saddam's regime.

Such close strategic bilateral contacts unfortunately ended when Bill Clinton came to power. Any plans of Central European countries of integrating with American economic, political and military structures suddenly vanished like a phantom.

Many influential Polish politicians and commentators realized that the only way out to escape from the post communist grey zone between former USSR and the Western World is to join the European structures. Since 1993 all Polish diplomatic efforts were directed to it. Although that wasn't the dream of Poles, since the way to the West led through Germany, there was nothing we could do about it.

The alternative was: join the EU or stay outside exposed to claws of the Russian bear. George W. Bush's presidency didn’t do much to change that. While Polish soldiers shed their blood in Iraq and were the staunchest US ally, EU press (especially German) mocked Poland mercilessly. "You see, stupid Poles, we Germans give a damn for America and we can do anything we need. We can travel to USA, even buy houses there, while all you can do is to give them more stupid Polish boys to be killed for US oil business in Iraq. Perhaps, who knows as miracles happen, in return, you will be honored by not being fingerprinted on their airports, let alone traveling to USA without special visas ".

Even this article, published by a German freeper wolf78 includes such primitive satisfaction and irony between lines.

So, Americans, don't be surprised with the article like this. The feeling of sourness is ubiquitous in Poland. That 92% of 1989 turned into some 50% in 2009 and you just earned this, while Obama has only hammered the last nail to the coffin, as a Polish saying goes.

We, the Polish, have our honor. Being expelled through the front door, we never try to come back through the backdoor.

By the way, Mr Wolf78, sooner will you see snow in the Sahara than a Polish and a German in such a friendly embrace.

Poland's gold medal winner Anna Rogowska and two exequo silver medal winners, US Chelsea Johnson (right) and Poland's Monika Pyrek make a round of honor under their national flags after the Women's Pole Vault final during the World Athletics Championships in Berlin on Monday, Aug. 17, 2009.
