Brown Stink Bug Invades D.C.-area

Experts say the insects are from Asia and first appeared in Allentown, Pennsylvania back in 1996. They then spread throughout our area and beyond. There are no known predators, so the bugs continue to creep into homes through cracks and crevices.

Experts say while last year was bad, this year will be worse.

"I thought I heard something rattling in the baseboard and there were hundreds in one window," Wade added.

Residents say they are under attack inside and outside of their home. "I was battling them out of the way," Milhaupt said.

Milhaupt says she snags them with tissue, handling them carefully in order to prevent the bugs form releasing their oily, mildew-like odor before sending them on their way.

I’m not aware of any way to destroy them. The first frost usually kills most of them. Our house is pretty tight, so they don’t get in easily, but they will attach themselves to items you’re carrying in the house and can fit through the smallest openings.

Thanks. I goggled it - good to know. The exterminator quoted in the article says there is no remedy - that’s hard to believe.

I don’t get it.

I just found this kind of beetle on-line (accidentally, while looking for another pest we have) that’s been around our area for some time (but not all my life) which is supposedly the SOLDIER BUG.

I guess they’re all “stink-bugs”, but I don’t know the difference in species here.

Just the other night, my toddler son spotted 1 above a high window and I picked it up and tossed it outside (and George obsessed on it all night).

I had no idea any of these might be “stinky”. I’ve never noticed an odor.
