Dropouts costing California $1.1 billion annually in juvenile crime costs (Captain Obvious Alert!)

High school dropouts, who are more likely to commit crimes than their peers with diplomas, cost the state $1.1 billion annually in law enforcement and victim costs while still minors, according to a study being released today. The California Dropout Research Project at UC Santa Barbara found that cutting the dropout rate in half would prevent 30,000 juvenile crimes and save $550 million every year. "This study demonstrates the immediate impact dropouts have on both public safety and the economy," said project Director Russell W. Rumberger. "If California could reduce the dropout rate, it could subsequently reduce the juvenile crime rate and its staggering impact on the state budget." Drop-out statistics are notoriously difficult to pinpoint, but according to the state Department of Education, nearly 19% of students don't graduate from high school. In Los Angeles County, the figure is more than one in five, and at some L.A. schools, fewer than half of students graduate within four years.

They assume that making the thugs stay in school would decrease their thuggishness.

News flash: the kind of people who prefer crime to work also have no interest in school. Their dropping out doesn't make them criminal, it's their criminality that makes them drop out.

It is already against the law to quit school in CA before the age of 18 unless you receive a diploma before that age. So how do they plan on reducing the drop out rate? What they are really talking about is the "fail to graduate rate", and the "schools suck so bad the kids don't learn anything" rate. All this is due to government interference in public schools, along with everything else they stick their noses into.

When I was in HS in California, back in the 50s, we could drop out whenever we wanted to after about age 14. The dropout rate was almost nil. The difference was schools taught you what you should know at that time, discipline was better and the graduation rate was much higher and no one was passed unless they actually earned it.

The bottom line? The more government the more screwed up things get.

"cutting the dropout rate in half would prevent 30,000 juvenile crimes and save $550 million every year"

What an utterly idiotic statement. Kids with criminal tendencies aren't going to suddenly become upright citizens because you force them to stay in school. Certainly, there would be some effect, but nothing as high as indicated.

And they aren't taking into account the difficulty and expense of dealing with these kids in school. You can't just stick them into the general student body and expect there aren't going to be serious problems. These kids are going to need specialized teachers and small, highly managed classes.

If you want to reduce the drop out rate in CA..export the illegals. The ones in school we know exactly who they are.
We may be required by the courts to educated them, but we aren’t required not to report them to ICE and have the apprehended and deported. Their screaming parents will go with them.
Then end chain migration.

Actually, that is part of the problem, another part, and probably the biggest part, is that blacks drop out and disappear into the ether(remember that?)at a higher rate than other races. That is the major cause of the crime among juveniles, illegal teenagers and blacks. Both due to what I said before, excess government engineering and meddling.

I bet a lot of them are smarter than they are portrayed, and maybe that’s the problem. CA schools are notorious indoctrination centers, as most everyone knows. Maybe dropouts realize that and wonder what the hell they are there for, since it isn’t for academics.

Many grow up in a society of people given all the basics ( food, housing, health care, and probably a little spending money) through the government welfare system. They don’t need to go to school and to work and earn a living to survive, so why should they?
