Canada to walk out on Ahmadinejad's UN speech

UNITED NATIONS -- Canada will boycott Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speech at the United Nations on Wednesday, saying his outbursts about the Holocaust and Israel are "shameful."

Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon will be at the world body to attend the opening of the UN General Assembly's annual debate, but officials signal he and other members of the Canadian delegation will vacate the Canadian seats when the Islamic republic's President approaches the podium.

Walking out of the chamber is seen as a strong diplomatic show of disgust at the UN -- and since the chamber is generally packed on the first day of the annual summit, Canada's empty seats will not go unnoticed.

One of the first speakers of the day will be U.S. President Barack Obama, who is making his debut address before the assembly.

"President Ahmadinejad's repeated denial of the Holocaust and his anti-Israel comments run counter to the values of the UN General Assembly, and they're shameful," said one Canadian official.

"He uses his public appearances to provoke the international community, and that is why Canada's seats will be empty."

The gesture is a step stronger than one announced on Tuesday by the German foreign ministry, which asked other European Union member states to walk out of the General Assembly chamber if Mr. Ahmadinejad again denies the Holocaust, or makes anti-Semitic statements.

The Canadian initiative will be welcomed by Israel, which on Tueday urged all delegates in the 192-member chamber to stay away when Mr. Ahmadinejad speaks.

"A few days ago he gave a new speech of hate," Gabriela Shalev, Israeli ambassador to the UN, told Israeli army radio. "The simple fact of leaving the room during his speech, or not to be present during it, is a symbolic act."

More bad news

Seems the lone Iranian AWACS, while flying over Terhan at the climax of a miltary parade, “bumped” into one of the escorting F5s - both planes landing in a flaming wreak on the tomb of Ruhollah Khomeini...

The representatives of the free countries should walk.

Can this be true? Canada has bigger stones than the U.S.?

Hell just froze over.

The loss of this airborne control system has left Iran's air force and air and missile defenses without "electronic eyes" for surveillance of the skies around its borders.

Not a conspiracy guy, but that was no accident.

Well done, Canadian Cousins!

Indeed, why wait to see if Imadinnerjacket says the dreaded words...again. He was flapping his gums a couple of days ago. He made his statement, those who find his behavior reprehensible should make theirs by exiting as he approaches the podium.

Sadly, I suspect the US delegation will keep their backsides glued to their seats.

Good for Canada.

I am now officially ashamed of my country. First, we are putting the screws to Honduras, which has been a valuable and loyal ally to us, and now we are paving the way to the UN with rose petals for Iran, while only Canada has the guts to speak up.

...has happened to this great country of mine?

What a shame. NOT! The landing spot is rather prophetic, IMO.

Are the Iranian pilots that bad, planes maintained that poorly, or something else altogether? Any guesses, folks?

I am more offended at them getting nukes then this silly speech. We all know they hate Jews and will kill them at any opportunity.

Three cheers for the Harper Conservatives! This should go a long way towards finally convincing Canadian Jews just exactly which political party supports Israel. Why Canadian Jews continue to vote Liberal is beyond me.

Now if we can only get the American delegation to walk out when the Obamanation approaches the podium! Because whatever this goofball is going to say will definitely not be in the best interests of the U.S.

Since your media it very daft when is comes to reporting anything negative about your president, and they'll probably want to embrace this Iranian stooge for your presidents benefit, since he want to talk to the lunatic for some reason.

I would assume that this story is an attempt to give a heads up to your media, not that they'll pay attention. Fox may report it.

“I am very proud of Canada!”

Yes, Canada has been a loyal ally for most of our histories; with the exception of the War of 1812 when we (U.S.)attempted to invade Canada which was understandable and the Vietnam War. Otherwise, I believe they've been in the Fray with us every time...

“Why Canadian Jews continue to vote Liberal is beyond me.”

One could ask the same question about American Jews. Pamela Geller suggests many are JINO’s. Seems a reasonable deduction.
