Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Saturday won a 2012 presidential preference straw poll of social and religious conservative activists from 49 states gathered in Washington, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said at an afternoon press briefing at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
It was sweet revenge for Mr. Huckabee, who narrowly lost a similar poll in 2007 to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Only in-person voting was permitted in this vote -- Mr. Romney had won with combined Internet and in-person voting.
On Saturday Mr. Huckabee took 28.48 percent of the vote, while Mr. Romney was in a four-way tie for second place with Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Indiana Rep. Mike Pence. All four won 12 percent of the vote in rounded numbers.

Huckabee is a smooth talking and affable man. Elderly church going folks who normally don’t vote, will come out to vote for Huckabee. Plus with Chuck Norris at his side and Huckabee’s guitar playing ways, the ex-AR Governor does better with the 18-29 year old crowd than other GOP candidates. Huckabee reminds young people of the fun loving youth pastor that had in their youth.
Mike Pence for ‘12 POTUS! And, no matter who the final GOP ‘12 POTUS candidate really is, no RINO’s, ever again! Senator DeMint is still very supportive of Mitt Romney, and this is his major weakness among conservative voters.
The Huckster and Myth Romney should be non-starters. It’s along way to go and time to focus on ‘10.
The Republican party needs to run a non-establishment type. A populist and a leaning libertarian.
Huckabee is not it. Never will be. Not ever.
**Once again, I say NO to anyone who ran in 2008 in the primary.**
I wish the GOP would put up a candidate that would not Raise my BLOOD PRESSURE SO HIGH that it causes a 45 minute NOSEBLEED..
They need to choose someone who appeals to all the GOP factions (including theirs, of course.) Huckabee doesn't. At all.
No.
George Soros isn’t under your bed. I doubt he’d care about a lame straw poll this early.
Agree
This is very sad! Huckabee really is a RINO! Huckabee supports amnesty for illegal immigrants, and he’s also a tax increasing socialist on most economic issues!
“Hunter/DeMint”
Pissant, sounds good to me!
**America had their say on Sarah Palin,**
Sorry, but I am convinced that there are many like me.. who voted for SARAH. I’m also convinced that if it was NOT FOR SARAH, Juan McLAME would have had a vote total to compare with MONDALE of ‘84.
If Sarah was not on the ticket, I would have stayed home, as my ONE PARTY STATE the local and state LIBS ran Unopposed.
And there people go AGAIN; ANYONE but Sarah Palin!
Huckabee just won’t cut it! I mean, I respect the man, but he doesn’t have near the star-power that Sarah Palin does! He can’t draw nearly the size of crowds that Sarah can!
I don’t care what the polls say; my friends and I still strongly back Sarah!
NO to Huckabee!
People can’t let their minds be polluted by the feces coming out of the liberals’ mouths about Sarah Palin!
WE WANT SARAH!!!!! I can’t believe it’s not obvious to people now that she is the only one who can beat Obama.
We need two strong people who actually have balls and will buck the liberals’ off of the back of our government:
SARAH PALIN & MICHELE BACHMANN, 2012!!!!!!
Me too! I want someone new not a retred!
I agree, we have way too much to worry about in 2010 to start polling for 2012. One step at a time here.
Mike Huckabee stepped into the 2008 campaign and was one of the reasons why McCain won.
The only reason why these “Value Voters” could possibly support a liberal fake like Huckabee is because the damned REpublican party has stopped talking about values. Steele has indicated that he doesn’t give a damn about values.
But we can certainly do better than Huckabee, who is basically a snake oil salesman, as he proved while governor of Arkansas. He is corrupt, he is liberal, and his only shtick is that he can stand up there and sound like an old fashioned revivalist preacher.
But he ain’t.
If we want values, how about Sarah Palin? She is a REAL Christian. She’s an Evangelical, not a Catholic. But as a Catholic, I would not hestitate to support her, because she really means and believes it.
Hey there,
Palin would have been at this event but her son came home from Iraq.
Jon Hunstman quit his UT Govenor job to be Obama’s China Ambassoador. No to anyone willing to work int he Obama adminstration.
Does Gary Johnson still live in New Mexico? In 2012, it would have been 10 years since he served as NM Governor. Will NM voters still remember him?
Folks need to check out Huck’s record as the governor of Arkansas. They might as well have had a democrat in the governor’s mansion.
Palin didn’t make it because she stayed home to welcome son Track back from Iraq. Once again, the other pols talk values, she lives them.
“The Republican party needs to run a non-establishment type. A populist and a leaning libertarian.”
I very much agree. We need someone that is truly for small, limited govt.
