TEHRAN — Iranian opposition supporters fought running battles with riot police and hardliners on Friday as tens of thousands mounted the first protest in two months against the re-election of hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Protesters defied dire warnings from top officials against demonstrating during the annual mass display of solidarity with the Palestinians that is one of the setpieces of the Islamic regime.
As Ahmadinejad himself gave the keynote speech at Tehran University renewing comments about Israel and the "myth" of the Holocaust that have sparked an international outcry, tens of thousands chanted "Death to the dictator" in nearby streets, witnesses said.
Shouting slogans in support of the hardliner's main challenger in the June 12 election, Mir Hossein Mousavi, the protestors gathered in major squares around the capital before joining the annual march to the university.
Hardline supporters of the regime were among the more than 100,000 people who joined the Quds (Jerusalem) Day rally, mounted counter-demonstrations leading to repeated scuffles between the two sides, the witnesses said.
Riot police, armed with batons, beat protesters who were pelting them with stones in the central Haft-e Tir Square, witnesses told AFP.

Obama doesn’t want to have to not deal with this again.
the same way Obama is contemplating right now -- Wag the Dog.
All those “Down with Israel” posters indicate that the Iranians have fallen back into their normal delusions.
Brave people! Hat tip to them. Prayers for those in prison who have done no wrong, especially persecuted Christians.
No! Read the article:

Those pro-regime protestors seem like a bunch of mindless drones. “Down with Israel” is the only thing they have to offer.
Obama needs to lend his teleprompter to Ahmadinejad.
Today is Jerusalem Day, a day set aside by Khomeini for any Iranian to protest against Israel. But the opposition is taking advantage of this day of legal protest to rally against Ahmadinejad and the regime. Green is the color of both Musavi’s campaign and of Hamas, so it will be difficult for the basiji to tell the two sides apart.
It would pretty ironic if Iran democratizes and becomes Israel’s biggest ally in the Middle East.
The anti-regime protesters are yelling “Death to Russia” while the Basiji puppets scream “Death to Israel” - interesting, no one’s talking about the U.S.
