I grew up listening to this group.

Absolutely agree - they would have been nothing without Mary. Her voice defined the female folk singer.

Really loved their music. Didn’t care for anything else about them.

Re:
I grew up listening to this group I did, too, but her politics were far left.

Just about everyone of a certain age did. We'll see what kind of response her death generates on this forum. No doubt many will decry her as a lefty who doesn't deserve a fond farewell; I prefer to remember a gifted performer who shared her talent and brought joy to many.

You couldn’t be a member of the folk wave w/o being a knee-jerk liberal. Great music (e.g. the Wedding Song) and Mary's presence did give the group a wide appeal. BTW if I judged performers by their politics I'd never buy a CD or movie ticket.

I still remember how pissed I was back in 1969 when “Leaving on a Jet Plane” bumped “Come Together” from the Number One slot.

I always think of the line from Animal House, “Just mention modern art, civil rights or folk music, and you’re in like flint.”

I think Puff the Magic Dragon was the first song I ever knew the words to. I was 2 when it came out nd I’m sure it helped me learn to talk. LOL

They were the children of the red-inspired Weavers of the 1940s — the living definition of kitsch — a mockery of real folk music, which they copied and made bland.
