It's not racism, it's being an American (Steele)
Politico ^ | 9/17/09 5:21 AM EDT | Michael Steele

Charges of racism are among the most serious that can be made in America because of our nation’s history on race relations. There is no doubt America has come a long way in healing past wounds, but there is certainly more to be done. That is why I am outraged that Democrats today, including former president Jimmy Carter, are injecting race into the debate over President Obama’s policies.

Voicing opposition to the president’s policy proposals is not being a racist. It is being an American. Such assertions by leaders of the Democratic Party are a pathetic attempt to shift attention away from the president’s wildly unpopular government-run health care plan that the American people simply oppose. Injecting race into the debate over critical issues facing American families does not create jobs, reform our health care system or reduce the growing deficit. It only divides Americans rather than uniting us to find solutions to challenges facing our nation.

This summer, Americans had an opportunity to witness the miracle of our political system. All over the country ordinary American men and women, concerned about the Democrats’ policies coming out of Washington, took a stand and expressed their opposition. It was grassroots American political activism at its finest. Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike voiced their opinions in public forums to public officials. It was a shining example of how our Republic was designed to function. This activism has not faded with the summer sun. Last week Americans from all walks of life flooded Washington D.C. and continued their public opposition to President Obama’s government-run experiments.

Excellent piece from Steele. I love watching the Democrats self-destruct. Shhhh.. Now if the GOP can just resist doing something stupid between now and next November.

Steele is coming along nicely, IMHO...I think he “gets it”. I was worried about him for a while...but I think this year’s events were the shot in the a** that he needed.

Well, this gives me a GLIMMER of hope for the Republican Party. If they could clean their own house and move away from the liberal left, there might be some hope.

I have to admit the word "racist" has no meaning to me anymore. It's the most abused word in the English language.

Agreed! Steele sounds much better here. There's hope for him yet.

This activism has not faded with the summer sun.

And he's developing a neat turn of phrase.

Not bad but I wish these apocrophyl tales of “racism” could be fleshed out by such worthies, otherwise he is another Olbermann type warning about the inate badness of the white devil to revert to the mean of his existance.

Agree on Steele, he was very up and down, and had some terrible moments, early on. But he now seems to get that the MSM is on the side of the enemy, and trying to please them with moderation and political correctness is futile.

LOL! Elementary, my dear Altura. This nation will have come full circle on race relations when President Obama loses in 2012, not due to his race, but because he was more incompetent than James Buchanan and Jimmy Carter, combined.

Well. Looks like the GOP woke up to the fact that the Democrats are using Race as a CYA. Good for Mike, its about 6 months late but I am glad he got with the current news.

Now, if Only the GOP would get we are sick of party picked candidates who don’t really represent us, and start actually start supporting those with enough guts to run from the grassroots, then we have gotten through to em.

Instead, in Oregon, the GOP is STILL trying to cherry pick candidates. When are they gonna get that this DOES NOT WORK? We are SICK of this? I mean seriously, didn’t they learn ANYTHING from McCain?

Good article, but he omits the fact that we are concerned about policies of BOTH parties. We want smaller government, a balanced budget, liberty, and honesty. Frankly, neither party offers much that resembles what we want. Third party, anyone?

“injecting race...does not create jobs...,reform health care...or reduce the deficit...”

I noted this part of Steele’s piece, and it reminds me of something Bill Clinton said during his campaign against Bob Dole and the Republican Party:

“No attack ever fed a hungry child”.

I don’t approve of anything Bill Clinton; however, I LOVE it when we can take the tactics they used for years against us and turn it back on them with devastating effect.

From a psychobabble point of view, the liberals are projecting onto the conservatives what they dislike most in themselves.

Mike, you need to know when to shut up and pay attention to cleaning the RINOs and liberals out of the party.

Until then, Republicans won't be presiding over the Rat self destruction or be able to offer a better governance alternative afterward.

Your frustration with both parties is justified.

However, third parties get us awful results.

Better if we hold the Republican Party’s feet to the fire so hot they are hopping around in pain until they get it.

Look at Bob Inglis in SC who told his constituents not to listen to Glenn Beck, and who voted against Joe Wilson.

He will have a campaign waged in the primary to rip his seat away.

So much better than wasting a vote on some entity that can neither win nor govern if they did win.

We want smaller government

Ditto. So many of the federal programs could be done much more efficiently at the state or county level. And done cheaper, at that. Taking over programs at the federal level creates an unnecessary level of bureaucracy that leads to cronyism and corruption. Solution: flatten out the pyramid and give power and programs back to the people.

Voicing opposition to the president’s policy proposals is not being a racist.

Did Carter say "voicing opposition", or did he say an "overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity"?
