Does anyone know why Michelle Obama had her law license revoked in 1993?
The official bar record, which is reproduced in one of the linked articles, says her bar license was “voluntarily inactive.” This would not be at all unusual for someone who had decided to cease practicing law. Maintaining an active license requires payment of an annual fee (usually several hundred dollars) and, in many states, meeting continuing legal education requirements. If you are not going to practice law, these are hassles you may want to avoid. If you change your mind and want to resume practicing law, you can have the license reinstated, though that may require proof of competence if you have been inactive for any significant period of time.
I read somewhere that BO’s license was revoked because he lied on the application where it asked if the applicant was ever known under another name. We know he went by the name Barry Soetoro while in Indonesia.
Her law license was revoked by the investigative and disciplinary committee. I doubt it is innocuous - I also doubt we will see the reason.
She stopped being an attorney and became a top fashion designer.
I’m not an attorney so am unsure of the difference between rescinded, revoked, disbarred, voluntarily surrendered etc etc. I don’t think if a law licensed was surrendered because of “inactivity” that the facts would be sealed. I read this on FR somewhere, and it said that the license was revoked by the Illinois Supreme Court - doesn’t appear to be a voluntary matter.
Yeah, she was considered too ugly to appear before the bench.

Didn’t Obama’s Senate Republican opponent have his sealed divorce records made public? Gues if you know the right people and pay the right amount of money you can unseal anything in Illinois!
Since Michelle is not in a position to run anything (as compared to Hillary back during the Clinton years), I’m not so sure this is important to us, nor should we make it a big issue.

If it is an ordinary happening that Michelle wasn’t practicing so she decided not to renwewhy seal?

Yawn, not this again . . . It was not “revoked”, it was placed on inactive status, as is routine for attorneys who are no longer practicing law in the state and don’t expect to be in the near future. It means you no longer get notices from the bar association reminding that you have to complete x number of worthless continuing education credits by x date, and you no longer get annual bills for for your membership fee. She can reactivate it any time she likes by sitting through a restaurant dinner-PowerPoint presentation that qualifies for c.e. credits and sending in a form with a check for the annual membership fee.
Funny but when I hit your Google link I got dozens of sites that mention MO’s revocation.

I recall reading about this sometime last fall. I believe her license was “suspended,” and it was not by the IL bar. It was a federal agency or watchdog group or something like that. It was also stated that this “agency” does not deal with minor problems.
Obama’s license probably just lapsed. But it would be interesting to know for sure.
