WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) --
A measure to put Amtrak passengers on the same footing as airline passengers, allowing guns in checked-through baggage, was passed by the U.S. Senate Wednesday.
The legislation, part of the transportation and housing appropriations bill, was approved 68-30. It would deny federal subsidies to Amtrak if it doesn't change its rules. The House version does not include the provision.
Domestic airlines allow licensed gun owners to transport their weapons in their checked-through baggage. One senator said the gun measure "is going to put a severe burden" on Amtrak, CNN reported.
But the measure's sponsor, Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., noted other railroads in the country manage to shoulder that burden.
"Only the federally subsidized Amtrak prohibits law-abiding American citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights in checked baggage," Wicker said.
Amtrak spokesman Steve Kulm said the railroad was mulling its response.
But for reals:
"...Domestic airlines allow licensed gun owners to transport their weapons in their checked-through baggage..."
Um, what is this "licensing" presstitutes always invoke? I have checked my gun several times and I do not have this mystical "license".
Long before ex gov/pres candidate/helmet wearer Mikey Dukakis was put on board the board. (He may leave to replace the recently deceased swimmer)
Licensed? Does CNN think that everone who owns a gun has to have a license? (Probably yes.)
At the same time in the new was a story about AMTRAK losing cars.
Finally a senator, I can't remember his name, said: “I have an idea...just mount all the ICBM’s on AMTRAK... GIVE the Russians the schedule, and they'll NEVER find them”
Law-abiding citizens should ALWAYS be able to carry guns.
What is so hard to understand about that????
Good point. One would think that licensed reporters would be more professional in their reporting.
I'm not a "licensed" gun owner and I often check guns.
I remember the good old pre-9-11 days when one could concealed carry on the train. Where those trains stop in the inner cities, it was a good idea.
Does AmTrak even screen luggage or passengers? It doesn’t appear so to me.
HA!
With what metal detectors?
That one’s gonna cost ya an overweight surcharge, pal. Now lock the case and show me yer key...
Anyone know the policy on carrying concealed on AMTRAK trains?
Anyone familiar with carrying on SEPTA (Philly)?
