The global warming narrative - that mankind's addiction to burning fossil fuels is rapidly changing the climate - may be about to go seriously off message.
Far from suggesting the planet will get warmer, one of the world's leading climate modellers says the latest data indicates we could be in for a significant period of steady temperatures and possibly even a little global cooling.
Professor Mojib Latif, from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University in Germany, has been looking at the influence of cyclical changes to ocean currents and temperatures in the Atlantic, a feature known as the North Atlantic Oscillation. When he factored these natural fluctuations into his global climate model, professor Latif found the results would bring the remorseless rise in average global temperatures to an abrupt halt.
"The strong warming effect that we experienced during the last decades will be interrupted. Temperatures will be more or less steady for some years, and thereafter will pickup again and continue to warm".
With apologies to Al Gore, professor Latif's finding is something of an "inconvenient truth" for the global warming debate.
And the timing couldn't be much worse. World leaders are due to meet in Copenhagen in December to hammer out an agreement on cutting greenhouse gas emissions to replace the Kyoto Treaty. It certainly won't help if there are a couple of inches of snow on the ground outside the convention centre, and climate models are predicting a sustained period of steady, or even falling, global temperatures.
Professor Philip Stott believes climate sceptics may seize on the research as evidence that the whole global warming hypothesis is fundamentally flawed: If natural cycles can interrupt, or even reverse climate change, maybe we don't need to take it so seriously...

When Krakatau blew up the CO2 and everything else that came out of it in tremendous quantities drifted around the wrld, and the Northern Hemisphere didn’t have any summer that year. Global warming? Democrat fantasy!

I might seize on this as casting some doubt on the global warming scare? Pray that not be true!
It CONFIRMS that these idiots who have been engaging in the global warming scare have had NO IDEA what has been going on with the temperature of Earth! Finally, they are starting to realize that their vaunted “models” are incomplete :: === WRONG!!!!!
There is NO good evidence that CO2 is a major influence on the temperature of Earth. There IS good evidence that Sol is a major influence on temperature of Earth.
These nuts have to throw out ALL their rottenness to the garbage. Then: start taking GOOD data using GOOD data stations that are publicly available. Start making adjustments for KNOWN problems like Urban Heat Island and changing paint on data stations if necessary or at least admitting when these affects are important. ADMIT that temperature measurements at ground stations are not really precise to 0.1 degrees. Admit that ALL the biases of researchers are in the direction of making things WARMER, so any problems that result in that occurring are not investigated as much as other problems. Admit that MODELS are NOT REAL but are based on the same fallacious ideas that may be present elsewhere because those fallacies are programmed INTO the models. Admit that the model can show anything from a 200 degree warming to a 200 degree cooling depending on the free parameters chosen, and that it is not at ALL reliable more than 5 iterations in due to the chaotic nature of this system.
All this is BULL. All I know is that the temperature of Earth has been rising since the Maunder Minimum at a small but rather steady rate. It seems that Sol is the reason for that rise. It is clear that mankind would be better off not worrying about it and going on our merry way enhancing our technological ability to deal with temperature changes regardless of whether they are warmer or cooler.
But how does he suqare his model with the fact that all we have really experienced for close to two decades is slow, steady cooling?
Within fairly broad limits, the earth is a self correcting system.
