An inconvenient truth about global warming
BBC ^ | 16 September 2009 | Tom Feilden

The global warming narrative - that mankind's addiction to burning fossil fuels is rapidly changing the climate - may be about to go seriously off message.

Far from suggesting the planet will get warmer, one of the world's leading climate modellers says the latest data indicates we could be in for a significant period of steady temperatures and possibly even a little global cooling.

Professor Mojib Latif, from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University in Germany, has been looking at the influence of cyclical changes to ocean currents and temperatures in the Atlantic, a feature known as the North Atlantic Oscillation. When he factored these natural fluctuations into his global climate model, professor Latif found the results would bring the remorseless rise in average global temperatures to an abrupt halt.

"The strong warming effect that we experienced during the last decades will be interrupted. Temperatures will be more or less steady for some years, and thereafter will pickup again and continue to warm".

With apologies to Al Gore, professor Latif's finding is something of an "inconvenient truth" for the global warming debate.

And the timing couldn't be much worse. World leaders are due to meet in Copenhagen in December to hammer out an agreement on cutting greenhouse gas emissions to replace the Kyoto Treaty. It certainly won't help if there are a couple of inches of snow on the ground outside the convention centre, and climate models are predicting a sustained period of steady, or even falling, global temperatures.

Professor Philip Stott believes climate sceptics may seize on the research as evidence that the whole global warming hypothesis is fundamentally flawed: If natural cycles can interrupt, or even reverse climate change, maybe we don't need to take it so seriously...

There is no global warming, man didn’t cause it and it’s actually cooling. Oops that’s three...

“The strong warming effect that we experienced during the last decades will be interrupted. Temperatures will be more or less steady for some years, and thereafter will pickup again and continue to warm”.

Thus the talking points are distributed for the folks who just won’t give up on man-made global warming. After all, they have to have some plausible explanation of why their predictions are not currently coming true.

But wait! We only have until the “thereafter” to find that warming will continue. /s

Temperatures peaked in 1998 and have been cooling since. It has been getting harder and harder for the alarmists to sweep this under the carpet.

Global warming is real. Whether we are the cause, I’m not sure I buy that. Bet this research has pissed off a load of people

The best we can hope for, he says, is a brief respite from global warming.

Nothing deters these loons, does it? No matter what the climate (or weather, they don't know the difference) is doing, it's man's fault & must be fixed by communism and destruction of freedom and living standards.

I've have come to the conclusion that we are witnessing mental illness, pure and simple. These people just can't deal with society, and this is their delusional refuge.

Global warming??? No matter what we do or not we are one major volcanic eruption away from global apocalypse. Yellowstone, anyone? It’s due. It’s a fact. Until then, follow the money.

If natural cycles can interrupt, or even reverse climate change...

...then obviously they are more powerful than any other trends. More importantly, they demonstrate they are far more powerful than anything mankind can do, either intentionally or accidentally, even over the course of decades. There, done. Global Warming is off the table.

Even if you still cling to the belief that man has caused some kind of climate change (up, down, or sideways) nature is demonstrating that we don't matter. So it would be audaciously naive to think we could affect the climate long term even if we wanted to be so bold and foolish as to try.

You’re right - I like that. “Pay no attention to the steady state periods or downtrends. Look only upon the upward trending data.” Why, I’ll bet these people can even pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

Years ago, there were shysters that claimed to be able to cause rain by boiling off various vapors into the atmosphere, and actually got paid for it, iirc. Nowadays, we have shysters who claim that other people's boiling fumes don't just cause a storm, they change the whole planetary climate. But other things remain equal — they still get paid, and they're still shysters.

I think the irony here escapes them.

Do they actually mean that the earth goes through cycles or trends from warm to cold and then back again?

Wow, who ever would have guessed?

Not only do they get paid, but I understand some of these shysters win academy awards, noble prizes, have even been Vice Presidents and actually have been taken seriously as a potential President of the United States.

I like to think that the American people are not that gullible.

With the Left, it’s ALWAYS about money and power.

Just restating the past eleven years data.

I'm guessing that they wanted to have at least one prediction come true, unlike their current standing of zero predictions coming true.

You forget that the Earth’s climate depends on an extremely delicate balance that can be upset by the slightest disturbance to the natural order.

The climate is full of positive feedback dangers that can trigger perpetual drought, heat, cold or you name it.

Sarcasm off..

It is a proven fact that the positive feedback mechanisms don’t dominate the climate on the Earth. This is shown by the evidence that none of the extreme events of the past triggered irreversible runaway effects. CO2 levels 10 times the current concentration didn’t trigger irreversible global warming. Huge areas of glaciation didn’t cause runaway cooling either.

Negative feedback mechanisms must dominate the climate system since, so far, it has been very resilient to perturbations like solar flares, comet impacts and huge volcanic eruptions.
