Michael Dukakis says he favors Massachusetts changing its Senate succession law so the current governor can name a temporary replacement for Sen. Edward Kennedy, but the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee won't say if he'd be a candidate for the job.
Introduced as "Senator Dukakis" in jest at a Statehouse ceremony Wednesday, Dukakis told reporters that pending political issues in Washington demand two Senate votes from Massachusetts.
He says lawmakers erred five years ago when they blocked attempts to let the governor temporarily fill any vacancy while a five-month special election campaign they created was under way.
Now a Jan. 19 special election is being held to replace Kennedy. But Dukakis thinks someone should hold the seat during the campaign.
Kennedy died Aug. 25 of brain cancer.

Can we say “ex post facto”?
How coincidental that when Romney had the governorship they didn’t support that, and yet now when a Democrat has the position they are for the complete opposite. Whores.

Micheal Do-ca-ca, most famous for his Ducacanomics that sent the whole state of Massachusetts down the toilet.
Yes, there’s a real source of wisdom.
Isn’t he off living in that tank somers...
He’s also at the top of the list for who they want as an interim appointee if this is approved.
Yes, I’m sure he is. If Romney wants to be useful, let him take this on. Of course then he’d vote for nationalized health care. Nevermind...
The Massachusetts Legislature: living down to our expectations on a daily basis.
No... I meant Dukakis is at the top of the list.
Sorry I mislead you Ingtar. I realized you were talking about Dukakis, so I thought Romney would at least be a better candidate. Sorry it sounded like I thought you were referring to him.
If they twist this law to allow an appointment, I would rather they chose a Liberal with a D after the name than one with an R after the name like Romney. If the deciding vote on this Federal Romneycare comes from this appointment, it needs to be a Democrat. Otherwise, the GOP (as usual) will take the fall.
Those are sound comments. I agree with you.
