That’s too bad. I didn’t even know he’d been sick.

I never liked the guy. He spent years trying to run Bobby Knight out of the University of Indiana (and Knight always gave him ammo just by being himself) then somehow parlayed this into leading the NCAA. Brand hated collegiate sports and was your typical jock-hating liberal prof who was jealous of how much money/attention coaches and athletic programs received. Brand was to college sports what Obama is to capitalism.

That said, nobody should have to go through pancreatic cancer. It is still a death sentence for anyone who gets it.

Myles Brand will be remembered for having fired Bobby Knight and virtually nothing else.

The problem here is that Bobby is obviously a severely handicapped man who has what is best described as an anxiety disorder.

Rather than doing what was right and providing him with appropriate medical assistance (of which there is no shortage at Indiana University), he set him up with one of those "one more time" deals which he knew Bobby would fail.

Myles did the right thing in leaving IU barely 2 years after the firing, and I certainly don't wish pancreatic cancer on anyone. His end has come before its time, but that happens sometimes.

Sad news. I hate to see this happen. Never agreed with him though. I thought his zero-tolerance policy towards Bobby Knight was over the top. He seemed obsessed with ridding the NCAA of all offensive names, mostly any reference towards native Americans. He got a huge payout from Indiana University when he left, even though it was to take a better job. Never sure why someone gets a huge payoff for leaving.

I worked for Bob Knight and love Bob Knight. Coach Knight would give the shirt off of his back for you. He just didn’t suffer fools, mostly the media and, well, Brand himself.

It is sad that Myles Brand had to suffer from such a horrible disease.

If you get a chance, read Michael Ledeen’s stuff about Brand and Knight. Great stuff about Brand ruining Indiana University and using Knight as his scapegoat.

Maybe Kurt Simic could be called in to see about getting the money back from the estate.

Myles certainly didn't make any friends at IU.

Was he bipolar perhaps?

Sad news. Prayers for his family.

Here’s hoping his successor now will cool it on Title IX and the Indian nicknames

I might be one of the few outside of Indiana (and New Mexico) who likes Bob Knight. Bottom line, he is a winner and as honest as the day is long. A little coarse sometime (often), but he is who he is.

Oh, you’d be surprised. There are a ton of Bob Knight fans out there. One of the very best teachers I’ve ever been around.

Excellent post. One minor correction...it is Indiana University, and not the University of Indiana. :)

Knight is one of the guys whose methods nobody would admire were he not winning games. Winning cures a lot of sins in the sports world. Not that he has been a big winner or had much of a team in more than fifteen years.

No, actually it isn't.
