GW Bush: "There is no [conservative] movement...I redefined the Republican Party"
Washington Examiner ^ | September 15, 2009 | Byron York

Posted on 09/16/2009 12:10:22 PM PDT by TBP

Bush was preparing to give a speech to the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC. The conference is the event of the year for conservative activists; Republican politicians are required to appear and offer their praise of the conservative movement.

Latimer got the assignment to write Bush's speech. Draft in hand, he and a few other writers met with the president in the Oval Office. Bush was decidedly unenthusiastic.

"What is this movement you keep talking about in the speech?" the president asked Latimer.

Latimer explained that he meant the conservative movement -- the movement that gave rise to groups like CPAC.

"Let me tell you something," the president said. "I whupped Gary Bauer's ass in 2000. So take out all this movement stuff. There is no movement."

I know that I started praying for the president, whomever he was, early in Clinton’s first term. I’m sure Bush had the prayers of millions. I really can’t explain what happened to him, He just became a Beltway person either from desire or osmosis.

Maybe it was earlier than I thought. Time flies when you’re having fun, you know.

He seemed to have a personal aversion to the world “veto,” that’s for sure. And some of that legislation was just jim-dandy as far as W was concerned and he was pleased as punch to sign.

AND we should stop allowing dims to select the GOP candidate by ending crossover voting. If they’re not registered GOP they don’t get to choose the GOP candidate. Dims will probably find some way around that but it will be harder and they won’t have the volume they have now.

the party wants winner take all in order to avoid GOP Convention floor fights.

Actually it was passed by state parties to make their states more important, since with proportional votes, or votes by congressional district, there would be less importance for their results.

In the old days (pre WWII) most delegates were picked by party caucuses or conventions, and tended to be long time veteran local politicians, who were free to vote as they wanted, although usually they were loyal to higher level politicos from their states.

Yours is the only post that seems to understand the nature and goal of this article...Funny how conservatives just knife each other when the bait is thrown.

at the time the discussion occurred...There was NO conservative movement...that part I believe. It is still in the forming stages of a new conservative movemnt..witness all the energy around this issue and the tension and discussion and division on the right.

As a conservative, Bush delivered on two of the main reasons I voted for him: the Supreme Court (Alito and Roberts were great picks) and keeping the country safe. On other issues, he was medocre or even terrible, but those two things, along with the poor quality of the alternatives, are why I still don’t regret my votes for him.

Both political parties are controlled by the same elite political class. The GOP is allowed to exist to provide an illusion of choice. The two-party system is illegitimate, as the weaker party inevitably becomes a pale imitation of the stronger party. Bush and his fellow RINOs returned the GOP to the Rockefeller model, with Reagan having been a brief interlude. The GOP is nearly identical to the Democrat party, with the exception that the GOP does more warmongering. I’m starting to believe that the solution may be to outlaw political parties, as Ben Franklin suggested.

Yes, keeping us safe for almost seven and a half years does count.

However, with that, Bush gave us, No Child Left Behind, a three quarter if a Trillion dollar expansion of Socialized Medicine with Medicare Part D, Campaign Finance Reform and attempted to force Amnesty for Illegal Aliens.

So, according to you, if Obama keeps us safe for 7.5 years, you would be okay with his expanding Socialized Medicine, expanding No Child Left Behind, giving us more Campaign Finance Reform and pushing for Amnesty?

I can’t believe what a thread like this does on here! It seems to bring out all the GWB haters like nothing else! It draws them like a magnet. We’ve got an avowed Marxist in the White House, and they take GWB apart on here like he’s the enemy; like I said, I can’t believe these people. (sad)

I’m sure like any other leader, GWB had his faults. No leader is perfect. People have a right to oppose him if they want. But it is sad that they believe any media person with an axe to grind, without looking to see if they are lying or not. Then they seem to go into a frenzy on here, and tell all of us what a bad president and in some cases a bad man they thought he was.

We read it over and over again, and it’s getting so tiresome! They’re not changing my mind about him, so it’s not working on me! Besides, GWB is gone, he’s not coming back into power, so why don’t they grow up and move forward? Geez!

What makes you think that I don’t? I give the Lefties hell every day. Most are so stupid that it takes only a post or two to send them into panty-twisting, eye-rolling madness.

I expect people here to be less stupid, but I’m so often disappointed.

“This is a hit piece designed to sow dissention between conservatives who want to turn the GOP back to Reagan-style conservatism “

No it is an article by Byron York about the guy-Latimer’s book. Maybe you should try reading it.

Well that’s funny! For someone who was never a conservative, like you say, he had a lot of strong conservatives who supported him and voted for him! I remember that very well! And for someone who was never a conservative, just how did he get a very conservative Republican like Dick Cheney to be his Vice-President? Hey, that takes some curious liberal or “socialist”, as some of you call him, to manage that!

Why would Mr. Cheney want to team up with a liberal or socialist to lead the country with? Can you answer that? Go ahead and try. I’m curious to see what you’ll come up with!
