A mob foiled a carjacking attempt of three criminals after beating a carjacker to death and injuring another critically in the capital's Pallabi on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Halim, 25, while the injured Muktar Hossain, 23, was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
Pallabi police said a gang of three criminals intercepted a private car and tried to push its driver out of the vehicle at gunpoint in Pallabi residential area at about 9:00pm.
The criminals also shot the car driver when he tried to resist them from snatching the car.
Hearing the driver's scream, locals thronged the spot, caught the two criminals and gave them a good beating while the other managed to flee.
Police took Halim and Muktar to DMCH after the incident where Halim succumbed to his injuries around 12:30am.
The condition of Muktar was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.
However, Halim's wife claimed that her husband was not a car-lifter but a driver of a rent-a-car shop.
One dead, one critical: Yep, sounds like a pretty good beating to me, too.
Good on them but I hope our U.S. 'mobs' have better results.
crime doesn’t pay? har har har! oh well!
That will learn him, durn him!
Now she knows why he was always driving a different car when he got home late at night and why she never saw the same car twice.
While I do not support mob justice, I will tell you this: Stealing from poor people will nearly always get you killed.
For them their property is literally a life and death thing. During my trips to the sub continent I had a driver tell me that if he got his car stolen his family would literally starve as this was their only source of income
So, I can understand (though not endorse) why a mob would kill some idiot who thought it was a great idea to steal a man’s livelihood
KIND of like stealing one’s horse.
Couldn’t do that here if it was an ethnic on white carjacking. It’d be a hate crime and you’d called a racist.
Darwin’s reach is wide.
When I was living in the middle east, a bus we were riding, came upon another bus that had overturned and rolled down an embankment, on a treacherous, remote mountain road.
It would appear that the accident had happened only recently. It was by a village, and the locals were administering to the injured, dead bodies were everywhere; including sheep and goat [which are usually tied to the roof of the public transportation.]
Hanging from a nearby tree were the lifeless bodies of two men. A man on the bus who spoke English, matter-of-factly told us that the men were caught by the villagers, stealing from the dead and injured. When they were caught red-handed, killed on the spot.
I used to have a photo of it, but lost in a computer crash.
Justice swift and true.
