Election 2010: Nevada Senate Race
Rasmussen Reports ^ | Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Posted on 09/15/2009 11:46:29 AM PDT by The_Victor

In what is currently a difficult political climate for Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid trails two potential Republican challengers seeking to unseat him as he faces reelection next year in Nevada.

The first Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of the 2010 race shows Sue Lowden beating Reid by 10 percentage points, 50% to 40%. Lowden is chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party and the preferred candidate of the Republican party establishment.

GOP hopeful Danny Tarkanian beats Reid by seven points, 50% to 43%. Tarkanian is a former basketball player for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the son of a legendary college basketball coach.

Any incumbent who polls below the 50% level is considered potentially vulnerable, and Reid is clearly in that category. Likely to help him somewhat, however, are the problems the state GOP is experiencing, with a highly unpopular governor and the state's other senator, John Ensign, forced to disclose an extramartial affair.

Wow. I really hope Reid gets taken down. He truly is a disgrace.

I think having his loser son on the ballot for governor will hurt his chances as well.

Now if Brian Sandoval defeats Gibbons in the GOP primary, Republicans should have a pretty strong ticket in Nevada in 2010.

Well the last Dem senate leader’s career was ended by the voters so hopefully history will repeat itself.

It would be nice if Senor Juan McCain lost in the primaries in 2010.

He and his family have done some pretty scanky real estate deals. He used his power to get some re-zoning done that benefitted his family’s interest. I read about this a couple of years ago. Sorry, don’t have a link for it.

I have a prejudice....Tarkanian is married to my daughter-in-law’s niece.
I have only heard good things about him through the family as far as his personal life goes.
His mother has been active in Vegas politics for years. He has good name recognition and he and his family are very attractive.
That’s my 2 cents worth.....

...just by virtue of being favored by “party establishment”...I’d say no. I would prefer to see “real people”...not that Tark is the perfect candidate. To me party establishment...means John McCain types. No more of those please

Across the nation the biggest problem conservative/actual American voters will face is intimidation at the polls. States like Nevada, which feature a dem senator in trouble, will “boast” SEIU thugs, Black Panthers and even ACORN workers at polling places throughout the state working to prevent voters from casting ballots. Next years exercise in republican government will feature the most corrupt, fraudulent process in the nations history.

Unfortunately, the election is not today.

Reid has deep pockets and will have months to viciously defame whoever Republicans ultimately nominate to run against him. The MSM will, of course, do whatever it can to help Reid get re-elected.

Reid also lost a court battle against Tarkanian awhile back. Tarkanian ran against Reid in the last election and Reid threw mud like crazy at Tarkanian. Unfortunately for Reid - the mud he threw turned out to be cr@p - not mud.

We met Danny and his family a couple weeks back at a candidate Meet and Greet. He is a real conservative and my husband and I really liked him.

My brother-in-law is very well versed in NV politics and he is high on Sue Lowden. I don't know anything about her. She also isn't scheduled to leave her current position and announce her candidacy until the end of September.

re: Lowden is chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party and the preferred candidate of the Republican party establishment.

I will gladly vote for Sue Lowden if she is the Republican candidate. Anything to get rid of Harry Reid! Despite any imperfections, she will be immensely better as a senator than Reid. However, the fact that she is the preferred candidate of the local party does disturb me some, considering that it did little to support the last candidate who ran against Reid. The last guy was a solid conservative, but since he had successfully run the campaign to ensure that marriage in Nevada is defined as being between one man and one woman, he was “tainted” in the eyes of some of the local RINO’s, including the Republican governor Kenny Guinn, who if I recall correctly actively supported Reid.

Re: Danny Tarkanian, he has never run against Harry Reid, as someone stated. He ran against democrat state senator, Mike Schneider, who maliciously libeled and slandered Tarkanian during the campaign. Tarkanian filed a lawsuit against Schneider and won.
