There was another thread posted earlier referencing a statement from Senator Caseys office regarding his vote not to eliminate federal funding for Acorn. The post stated the following:
ACORN has never received any federal money and as a non-profit is not permitted to be involved in political activities. In addition, because of the aforementioned, the amendment was frivolous and not worthy of the Senators time.
I was not aware of how funds actually flowed to Acorn, but if you look at their website this is what they state:
Does ACORN Recieve Federal Funding?
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now does not apply for nor does it receive any federal grants.
ACORN has had contracts with other nonprofit organizations to perform work on projects which received federal grant support. For example, ACORN has received contracts to:
Identify families eligible to receive food stamps and assist them to apply.
Identify homeowners facing foreclosure and deliver them for housing counseling and loss mitigation services.
Provide lead paint remediation services to households with children living in older neighborhoods.
The contracts that ACORN receives on these projects are for delivering specific activities, all of which are tax-exempt qualified in accordance with federal grant guidelines. No payments are received until work product has been delivered.
None of ACORN's contracts to perform work on projects receiving federal grant money has provided funding for voter registration.
If this is true Casey is correct?
Why are they asking for 1.6 Million currently, if they get no federal funding? Let alone the BILLIONS in the ‘stimulus’
I would sure like to have the answer to this question.
Are you sitting down? This may come as a shock: Casey LIES.
i thought they were funded by feds....how are they getting tax dollars......
LoL...
Funding, grants, and work for hire contracts are different things. It looks like Casey may be correct. The devil is in the details!
Bottom line, if tACORN doesn't receive tax dollars, why are they spending so much time denying that they do?
Something about protesting too loudly.
If they receive no federal money, what harm is there in making sure that legislation makes it explicit?
They get money from elsewhere, too:Teachers unions have contributed over $1.3 million to ACORN By: Kevin Mooney

Money laundering??
ROFLOL! That was good! He is a Democrat and goes with the territory — he lies. Cannot believe he is defending ACORN and he is so stupid to say they don’t get federal funding or ask for it when they just did ask for more.
Forget about “grants” - it’s a red herring. Based on Acorn’s statement at the link, it looks like they are strictly contractors for the Federal Government. The controversial voter registration drive and the housing consulting services they provide are probably done by contract with the government or sub-contract with a government contractor.
In short, the congressional bill, as it stands, is worthless. It should have required that ACORN be removed from the Federal Approved Vendor list (or whatever the official title of that list is).
ACORN gets grants from institutions that get Congressional appropriations, they don’t get money appropriated by Congress direct.
When you call your Senator & Rep. and they tell you ACORN doesn’t get appropriations from Congress, tell them to freeze all appropriations to any institution giving ACORN grant money, like the NEA, etc.
Hud? who will audit hud?
BUMP - see #16!
I hate word games. They can call it what they like. They are getting tax payer money. Casey is a tool.
