SC Senator Preston Smith Brooks beat Republican Senator Charles Sumner (MA) within an inch of his life for criticizing Franklin Pierce and those who sympathized with pro-slavery violence in Kansas. Sumner was unable to return to office for three years. Brooks, and fellow Democrat SC Senator Laurence Keitt (who prolonged the savage beating by holding off the other Senators with a pistol were "censured" and returned to work the next day.
