As state sat, illegals got OKs to drive (Ohio)
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH ^ | September 13, 2009 | Randy Ludlow

Posted on 09/13/2009 5:31:19 AM PDT by Comparative Advantage

loophole in an Ohio policy allowed thousands of undocumented immigrants to register cars and get license plates even though many did not have valid Social Security numbers or car insurance.

The practice was so widespread that law officers in other states asked the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles why they were seeing so many undocumented immigrants driving cars registered in Ohio.

State Public Safety Director Henry Guzman delayed a proposed crackdown for more than a year after he met with people who cater to such immigrants, including people who were profiting from obtaining plates.

Guzman initially requested tougher regulations, describing them as vital to "the safety and security of all Ohioans from a Homeland Security perspective." The regulations were to take effect on Aug. 1, 2008.

But he decided they needed more work after a July 31, 2008, meeting with dozens of mostly Latino business owners. The car dealers, financing and insurance-company officials, and others were worried about their bottom lines and undocumented workers' ability to drive and support their families.

Officials say that, unknown to Guzman, present at the meeting were some "runners" -- Latinos with legal U.S. residency who collected fees of more than $100 each from undocumented workers to register vehicles with falsified power-of-attorney forms.

Guzman's planned two-week moratorium ultimately stretched to more than a year. The stricter regulations weren't put in place until Aug. 24 this year.

Guzman announced his resignation three days later amid a feud with State Highway Patrol superintendent Richard Collins, who also quit. Guzman's last day on the job is Friday. He did not respond to a request to be interviewed for this story.

They should hang this around Stricklands neck and make him wear it for the 2010 election.

I think John Kasich will make this an issue.

It's against the law in Ohio to drive without insurance and these idiots and thug gangstas get away with it all the time.

And with a driver’s license, you can vote. I’ll never believe every voter in this state was cross-referenced to verify citizenship. Recently a new national database was built and linked into driver’s licenses. Maybe the President can do something on a nationwide level about verifying citizenship with driver’s license numbers before the next election. Ensuring free and fair elections could only be a win-win, yes?

In my state of Washington, it is illegal to ask for proof of citizenship. All you need is an address and be able to pass the drivers test.

This is what happens when Dems are in charge. And now Dems are in charge of EVERYTHING. They need to OWN all this misery. We need to publicize statistics from pre-2006 and post-2006 when the Dems took over at the National level. Our money woes really gained steam when they took over the House and Senate. All Blue states are doing much worse since then, also.

True in Los Angeles when they get into an accident the first thing they do is run because the leave the title in the last owners name.

I am from Ohio. It is not dead. We are just waking up. The corruption being discoverd in the county government is turning the tide. The county in question includes Cleveland. People here are just as upset as everywhere else. The tea parties here in ohio have been very large. Don’t count us out just yet!

“True in Los Angeles when they get into an accident the first thing
they do is run because the leave the title in the last owners name.”

Absolutely true.
In the fall of 1995 I was standing in line at the Cloverfield DMV
office in West Los Angeles to register my car and get a California
Drivers License.
With the lengthy wait in the Workers’ Paradise of Mexifornia and
the understandable boredom...the guy in front of me says he’s there
to get plates for his new car.
Because “some undocumented alien” totalled his car by rear-ending
his vehicle on one of So-Cal’s freeways.
He said, “all I saw was the blur of the b@$tard running like h-ll
from the accident scene”.

I had to waste a week of my life (while starting a new job) because the
DMV flip-flopped and made me take a Drivers test (due to some lawsuit
the DMV got hit with) and trying to get my ancient Chevy inspected by
the CHIPs to assure them that my car wasn’t stolen.
(I could barely contain myself from saying “DO YOU REALLY THINK A
CAR THIEF WOULD GO AFTER THIS PIECE OF GM JUNK?)

Ah, the joys of one-party rule.

“loophole in an Ohio policy allowed thousands of undocumented immigrants ...”

Calling illegal aliens — people Who Broke the Law — “undocumented immigrants” is like calling an illegal drug dealer an “unregistered pharmacist,” or a burglar an “unlicensed building inspector.”

Anytime anyone uses “undocumented immigrant” we need to right then and there challenge them on that propaganda term.

Another case of the legal Latinos facilitating the invasion of the illegal ones and making money in the process

I would deport all of them legal and illegal

Here in Pennsylvania (as I suspect is true in many states), you cannot register a car or even get an inspection sticker without proof of insurance.

If you get caught driving a car without proof of insurance, your car gets impounded and your license gets suspended on the spot.

But somehow it seems illegal aliens are exempt from the same damn laws we mere citizens are expected to obey.
