House Speaker Nancy Pelosi considered gaveling Joe Wilson out of order Wednesday night, but decided against calling out the South Carolina Republican in front of a national audience.

“The episode was unfortunate. He has apologized. It’s time to talk about health care,” Pelosi told reporters today.

But Pelosi, who appeared startled, then angry, after Wilson’s outburst, acknowledged that she was “shocked” at the incident.

Pelosi said that she thought about taking formal action against Wilson but quickly decided that was not appropriate. And she said that President Obama “did the right thing” in simply resuming his speech after the heckling.

Pelosi said the House parliamentarian passed her a piece of paper during the proceedings outlining her options for formal action, but she did not say what those options would have been if she chose to exert her powers from the speaker’s chair.
