It's Simple: Medicare for All
The Washington Post ^ | September 13, 2009 | George S. McGovern

Posted on 09/11/2009 8:00:40 PM PDT by GoldStandard

For many years, a handful of American political leaders -- including the late senator Ted Kennedy and now President Obama -- have been trying to gain passage of comprehensive health care for all Americans. As far back as President Harry S. Truman, they have urged Congress to act on this national need. In a presentation before a joint session of Congress last week, Obama offered his view of the best way forward.

But what seems missing in the current battle is a single proposal that everyone can understand and that does not lend itself to demagoguery. If we want comprehensive health care for all our citizens, we can achieve it with a single sentence: Congress hereby extends Medicare to all Americans.

Those of us over 65 have been enjoying this program for years. I go to the doctor or hospital of my choice, and my taxes pay all the bills. It's wonderful. But I would have appreciated it even more if my wife and children and I had had such health-care coverage when we were younger. I want every American, from birth to death, to get the kind of health care I now receive. Removing the payments now going to the insurance corporations would considerably offset the tax increase necessary to cover all Americans.

Considering that everyone has been complaining about Social Security and Medicare regarding how these programs are designed, operate and associated costs for the longest time. In the last several years the same political class and “Friends of Government” have been telling use how messed up the programs are and that they can not repair them without more money. Well I suggest that they fix these two programs first then get back to us. Further, this useful idiot McCain type should go to “U.S. Debt Clock” and review Unfunded Liabilities at the bottom.

I can remember when McGovern said the solution to hard economic times was wage/price controls. I imagine he was a good history professor, but common sense is not his forte.

I need a new truck. Can I trade my health care in for a new truck instead? Ford. I don’t want no obama motors.

No, they don't and the taxes the typical senior citizen pays don't even come close to paying for their care. It is MY taxes that are furnishing you with all your "free" health care.

Last night, believe it or not, during a dream, I was having an argument with some liberals on Obama’s health plan. (I know, that’s a weird thing to dream about, but it’s true.)

And, in my dream one of the arguments I made against it, which I am surprised that nobody has made already, is that in order to make it work, everyone who enrolls would have to be identified and issued some form of numbered card, which would turn out to be a national de-facto identification card, just as social security numbers became in the past.

This would result in a nation-wide database on virtually everyone.

Now, both liberals and conservatives, for different reasons, have opposed a national identification card scheme for decades. Yet, nobody seems to be concerned that they will be slipping one into place by stealth if Obamacare passes.

OK, some one tell me I’m wrong and why, and I’ll go back to dreaming of naked women.

One of the liberal gals in the dream was kinda hot, though.

Obamacare is deficit neutral, completely paid for by rooting out that "waste and fraud" that we magically found yesterday. Only with health reform can we get to that waste and fraud, sort of like it's a map to the Sierra Madre.

Anyone want to be that a lot of this fraud is people illegally getting treated for a real medical problem that they can't afford or isn't covered? So what happens when national health care comes? You guessed it: This "fraud" becomes a real, covered expense. So much for the cost savings.

No - I don’t have an accurate sense of how much to adjust downward the per capita amount for present Medicare users. But you can pretty much intuit that the overall amount, when expanded to the full population will be an enormous amount, perhaps over a $trillion a year. I’m open to any links to serious analysis of this issue - post away. The real numbers are very hard to come by. For instance, Heritage has a good analysis of what was then the Proposed Medicare Part D benefit in 2003. It was still proposed legislation at that time. Clearly the legislation and the costs of that program changed from the time the legislation was proposed to the final form as voted on.

But everything is dynamic - and you never get an apples to apples comparison in budget issues. In part because costs do change as the economy ebbs and flows, but also due to the fact that Congress never includes in the cost of a new program funds for data collection and analysis to evaluate the true cost of that program. They just go on to wasting money blindly in some other form.

Right now Medicare is paying providers and hospitals at the rate of about twenty cents on the dollar of actual cost for service. The only way most doctors can see Medicare patients is as a charity, with the fees of other, non-Medicare patients compensating for the loss. The idea that the whole nation might be using Medicare is like imagining a Soviet healthcare plan, with Russian sixties-style quality of care.

Medicare is already broke. Part A has been subsidized by the General Fund since 2008. And the general fund provides 75% of the revenue for Parts B and D.

Dear Governor Perry,

On March 30, 2009 the Texas House of Representatives passed HCR 50 affirming that the State of Texas claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment.

You have publicly supported this bill, and stated that attorney generals from all over the union could be getting ready to sue the US Government.

We are asking you to take the lead.

We are asking you to order the Texas Attorney General to publicly begin working on a law suit under Article IV, Ninth, and Tenth Amendment of the Constitution.

We are asking you to protect the citizens of Texas that we will not stand for government controlled healthcare in our state.

Under your leadership we can effectively kill the proposal of this administration and allow Texas to be a state free from socialism and collectivism.

Be the voice of reason in the national debate and allow Texans the ability to solve the problems of our state.

Thank you,

Facts about the 10th Amendment:

The Tenth Amendment (Amendment X) of the United States Constitution, which is part of the Bill of Rights, was ratified on December 15, 1791. The Tenth Amendment restates the Constitution’s principle of Federalism by providing that powers not granted to the national government nor prohibited to the states are reserved to the states or the people.

HCR 50 HAS PASSED THE HOUSE 99-36!
Affirming that the State of Texas claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the U.S. Constitution, serving notice to the federal government to cease and desist certain mandates, and providing that certain federal legislation be prohibited or repealed.

Take Action! Before it is too late!
