Liberty vs. 'Soft' Tyranny

Everyone talks about "Liberty", but do they really know what it means.

Unfortunately, many Americans no longer recognize the difference between the liberty that produces prosperity and the "soft" tyranny that promises utopia.

If you cannot crisply articulate the difference, I'd recommend comparing the 10 Attributes of Liberty vs. "soft" Tyranny found at http://www.streamingliberty.com/

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Constitution/Conservatism; Government
KEYWORDS: attributes; levin; liberty; tyranny

Soft tyranny is just the doorway to dictatorship. It’s a transient that doesn’t last and isn’t intended to.

Very good. We also must distinguish between Liberty and License. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

Mark Levin has already written a book about this, in case you haven’t heard.

Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto

Rights exists solely as a way to fairly decide whose will shall prevail in cases where two or more people disagree. They do not exist for the purpose of enslaving one person for the benefit of another (e.g., the “right” to free medical care.)

Liberty is the right to do whatever does not infringe the rights of others. Rights empower you to help yourself, free from interference by others.

Tyranny makes you a serf to be used by the elite to further their own power. Once upon a time, the nobility used religion to convince the serfs they had to serve the nobility. Modernly, the elite use good people’s feelings of altruism to convince them to enslave both themselves and their neighbors. It’s basically the same con game, just using a more sophisticated hook.

Excellent site with a very cogent comparison of the two. I recommend sending this to all your friends, especially the left-leaning ones.

But how do we get these ideas into the heads of our younglings? Do we need a volunteer corps of history teachers, maybe dressed as minutemen?
