French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday unveiled a new carbon tax to help combat global warming, calling it a "fiscal revolution" and overriding strong public opposition to the plan.
The new levy on oil, gas and coal consumption by households and businesses will come into effect next year, making France the biggest economy yet to impose a straight-up carbon tax.
"It is time to create green taxation," Sarkozy said in an address in Culoz, a town near the French border with Switzerland.
"This is a major fiscal shift, an important innovation," he said. "It is the first step of a fiscal revolution that will be developed."

Ping!
How long till the French peasants start hunting down those guillotines that served in the French Revolution.
Sorry, won’t happen. Remember, its Europe that gave the world Facism, Communism, and every other crappy “ism.” there is. And besides, that’s how the rest of the world rolls! They expect to have their Gov’ts dump on them. In turn, they do their best to cheat the system. It winds up making everyone cynical.
...and he represents the right in France. What a shame.
OK,you Sarkozy fans, here is your wake-up call;he just showed himself to be another big-government socialist!
I’m a Sarkozy fan, but that means I think he’s good for France. He’s as close to sane as we’ll find in France.
Plus, as long as we don’t sign up for carbon tax, there will be a way out.
In general, I’m happy because the EU countries are turning right overall ...
Sarkozy is like our McCain.
I don’t get it. How come he is trying to force things through against the will of the people? Are these guys feeding off each other or something?
He can’t help it, he’s French.
My prediction: He has just dramatically shortened his time in office. He will be lucky not to lose his head.
Well, there goes any thoughts to visiting France. I almost started respecting Pres. Sarkozy.
