Obama's Speech Was Nothing New
Washington Post ^ | Michael Gerson

Posted on 09/09/2009 10:35:36 PM PDT by Chet 99

If history is a guide, presidents who devote a joint session of Congress to a single domestic issue gain a bump. The drama of taking the center stage of American politics increases both attention and support. President Carter’s 1977 energy speech resulted in a nine-point rise in the percentage of Americans who thought the nation had a serious energy problem. After President Clinton delivered his health care joint session in 1993, 79 percent of Americans agreed that the health care system needed fundamental changes or should be “completely rebuilt.”

Neither speech, however, changed the fundamental political dynamic in Congress. And neither did Obama’s entirely predictable remarks.

The theory of Obama’s speech was simple -- that the arguments for his existing health reform plan needed to be made more loudly. It was as if the last few months -- bringing one of the largest drops in presidential approval in modern history -- never happened. We heard the same approach, the same arguments and the same straw men, with the only major difference being a sharpened tone against opponents. It was as if Obama spent his summer vacation not in Martha’s Vineyard, but in a soundproof room.

Joe Wilson hit the only home run of the game.

The textbook narcissist continues to be... a textbook narcissist.

The first four words of the title are accurate even without including the fifth word.

0bama’s speech was...nothing.

Joe Wilson summed up the entire speech succinctly...

“YOU LIE!”

"that the arguments for his existing health reform plan needed to be made more loudly"

How sophisticated!

Neither speech, however, changed the fundamental political dynamic in Congress.

Maybe it's because the "79% approval" that Clinton's speech got and the "9% bump" that Carter's speech got were fabrications created with faulty polls. Just like the "67%" of "adults" who approved of this speech.

Agreed and my husband and I will now be contributing to his re-election campaign.

An empty suit who's out of touch---and the whole USA knows it.

I got a Johnny Cash-type singer in my band. We're going to do a song about Obama's precipitous decline and call it, simply, "Train Wreck."

If you want I'll send you a MP3 or a CD.

Does this mean that the liberal media is also giving up on Obama? Must just be a glitch...(his editors will be jumping all over him tomorrow)...

Of course he is right on and if anyone was swayed by his speech, they are in the troublesome range (ie., less than those that actually think about the speech - of course with today’s education system, that could amount to several million people (maybe that is what they are hoping for)).

Correct... but he blew it by deciding to apologize for his actions (PC of course)... Too bad...he said the only honest thing during the speech! Now he denigrates it by apologizing...Guess that the PC police got to him...

He didn’t blow it.

One should apologize for yelling “The Emperor has no clothes!” while at court.

If people notice he’s naked afterward, well, he did apologize.

he did not apologize for what he said; he apologized for where he said it.

What people fail to realize is, Reid and Pooploosli have already agreed to pass the bill, using underhanded tactics by not allowing a Republican vote or the Super majority requirement.

They WILL cram this down our throats because they still believe the Public will forget about it in 2010. They will do the same thing with Crap & Tax. They will pass it in a Midnight session and the press will keep it on the 8th page.
